wickedflea: (don't you see that)

I have reports from relatives in two states (MS and GA) that their Obama signs have been stolen from their front yards. I imagine people will be burning crosses in two weeks if he wins. Clods.

(And yes, I know it happens on both sides of the aisle and in all areas of the country. Save it.)

Yeah, my Georgia kin aren't too far from you, actually. And I really wish we could fast-forward through about the next three weeks.

Apparently that person lives in Mississippi.

EXCELLENT! I wouldn't be surprised if she's in cahoots with my cousin in Jackson who took similar measures when her sign for another Democrat candidate was stolen some time ago.

Also, it could be worse: in Toronto, somebody was going around and cutting the brake lines of the cars of people with political signs in their yards. Who knew Canadians could get that fired up about something?

I have been surprised by the number of people who proudly display Obama material in this part of the state (MS). This is a highly racist area, in which the word 'Democrat' is used as a racial indicator. Nevertheless, people have not been shy about advertising their affiliations. I can say that I admire the conviction at least, and hope people keep behaving themselves as we get closer to crunch time.

I was probably foolish to put my sticker on my truck before I left Tuscaloosa, especially considering that we had two separate rashes of racist vandalism in my apartment complex--one right after I got to town, and one right before I left. But yeah, I can't say that I really suffered any repercussions--not even a middle finger in traffic (not for that, anyway). :)

If I put a sign in my yard promoting my candidate, someone would probably burn my house down!

I saw Ralph speak a week or so ago! I really do agree with him more than any other candidate, and I voted for him eight years ago because Joe Lieberman is the devil.

Are they going to be okay? Of course, I have relatives I keep a safe distance from because they think Reagan is God, Daddy Bush is Jesus, and Dubya is the Holy Spirit.

I hear you. The only thing worse then a democrat sign is a socialist party sign. In this neighborhood My candidate is probably viewed worse then the United Fascist Union party or the Nazi party.

I think they'll be OK, although of course you never know. And yeah, I have some relatives who are pretty backward in their own right--some aunts and an uncle who grew up staunch southern Democrats and never abandoned the party even after the Dixiecrat split of the '60s and the GOP/fundamentalist marriage of today, but now think the idea of voting for a black man for president is just the craziest thing they ever HEARD of. :\

I haven't really stopped to think about reactions in the south. that'll be something

You're gonna see people going around picking up elderly folks who normally wouldn't get out to vote, just to vote against the black guy. I guarantee it, and I've seen it happen.

I know this is going to sound lame, but I saw them do that once on King of the Hill. I just thought it was fiction. The area I live in is very liberal and that's just unreal to me. I forget that way of thinking really does exist in some communities.

It seems completely unreal to me, too, but it happens. I can't say whether it happens in Ohio or Montana or Oregon or wherever, but it can and does happen where I'm from. I'm the south's biggest defender and I'll always love it, but I can't deny that stuff like that is out there.

Okay, kinda related because it does have to do with a political sign. My neighbor, this old guy who is a gamblin, drinkin, Cadillac drivin, ho buyin, pinky ring wearin, mac daddy recently put a sign in his yard. I was pretty surprised when I first saw the sign, because I would never have taken him to be someone who is passionate about politics. I have to admit it kinda made me feel like he was selling out. "Wow," I thought, "a shame he is all becoming a fine upstanding concerned citizen and whatnot." Since I am now old and can't see, I wasn't really sure what the sign said, but I could tell it had a box with a check mark in it. I found out this morning that it is urging folks to vote yes to a referendum that would bring slot machines back to our state. HOW FITTING! I lmao and totally regained all respect for him. We all have our passions, don't we?
