There's a big, nice umbrella that normally resides in my work area. My predecessor in the job left it, I guess, so I've claimed it; I leave it here so that I'll have one if I forget to bring one from home. Anyway, early last week a lady in the office was lamenting that she had left her umbrella at home, and she was going to have to walk to her car in the rain, blah blah blah. So I told her, "You can take this one." She asked if I was sure, and didn't I need it, and I said no, it's an extra one that Jean left, I just keep it here for a spare, blah blah. So she thanked me and took it. She brought it back the next day, but she didn't give it to me; she took it right on into her office, and I haven't seen it since. Was I ambiguous? Did she think I meant that she could take it to keep?

She obviously thought you meant she could have it. Just go explain to her in a non-accusing way what you meant. Try to make a light of the situation or say something funny so that she doesn't feel like such a dumb ass when you do it.

That's what I'd do, anyway.

Yeah, that sounds good. Maybe one day when it's raining, real casual-like...

Do it right away or else it will kind of become her umbrella by default. KWIM? Make it out to be your fault for not being more clear.
