going home sick

wickedfleaWhen I left work early this afternoon, all I wanted to do was come home and have a bowl of soup.
The thing is, when I got home I realized that I was out of the only kind of canned soup that I eat -- Campbell's Chicken Gumbo.
I really didn't feel like going out, but I really wanted that goddamn bowl of soup, so out I went.
The thing is, none of the grocery stores in my immediate area carry that soup -- a fact that didn't dawn on me until I was already in the car. The only place around here that carries it is Super K-Mart, which isn't exactly near here. What the hell, I thought, I'm already in the car -- so off I went, headed to the K-Mart in Wallingford about 15 or 20 miles away.
The thing is, when I got there they didn't fucking have it. I stood there for a good seven minutes scanning the shelves and seriously considering dropping to my knees and having a screaming, crying fit. Finally I did manage to spy a few cans of Healthy Choice gumbo, so I grabbed a couple of cans of it. This stuff had better be good, or else I'm going to drive right back up there and have my screaming, crying fit, other shoppers and nervous store managers be damned.
Then, for some reason, I kept stopping on the way home. It was that feeling of "well, I'm already out, and I do need a cheese straightener and some candied yams, so . . ." I made three or four stops like that.
The one good thing to come of my unusually circuitous trip was the discovery of the coolest video store I've ever been to. I was in there for ten minutes and came out with four videos that I'd never been able to find ANYWHERE, including the Hunter S. Thompson documentary The Crazy Never Die and the first Decline of Western Civilization, both of which I'd been looking for for YEARS. And I didn't really even spend any time browsing; no telling what I'll find when I go back. I mean, it looked like they had EVERYTHING.
Anyway, after all that, I walked back in the apartment approximately 12 minutes before I would have had I stayed at work the whole afternoon.
