I couldn't stand it -- I had to break my tradition of not housecleaning on weeknights and knock out some of this squalor.

I was just thinking -- if I stopped eating food, drinking fluids, and smoking cigarettes, there would be a lot less mess around here.

But there would still be clothes thrown everywhere. And stacks of CDs and video tapes falling all over the place and guitars on all the chairs and sofas and fucking BOOKS and magazines like you wouldn't believe.

Sometimes I think that it would be cool just to get rid of all my stuff and live a very bare-bones existence. But if I ever tried to do that, I'd be like Steve Martin in The Jerk:

Well I'm gonna go then! And I don't need any of this! I don't need this stuff. [pushes all of the letters off the desk] And I don't need you. I don't need anything except this [picks up the ashtray] and that's it and that's the only thing I need, is this. I don't need this or this. Just this ashtray. And this paddle game -- the ashtray and the paddle game and that's all I need. And this remote control. The ashtray, the paddle game and the remote control, and that's all I need. And these matches. The ashtray, and these matches, and the remote control and the paddle ball. And this lamp. The ashtray, this paddle game and the remote control and the lamp and that's all I need. And that's all I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one -- I need this! The paddle game, and the chair, and the remote control, and the matches, for sure. Well what are you looking at? What do you think I am, some kind of a jerk or something? And this! And that's all I need. The ashtray, the remote control, the paddle game, this magazine and the chair.
