Subject: A.Word.A.Day--pudency

pudency (PYOOD-n-see) adjective

Modesty, bashfulness.

[From Late Latin pudentia, from pudent-, pudens, from pudere (to make or be
ashamed).]

If today's word bears a resemblance to the word for female privates, it's
because there is a link. Both sprout from Latin pudere (to be ashamed).
Impudent is another word originating from the same source. -Anu

"`The most important thing is the ship, and the ship needed someone at the
helm who knew better about the operational aspects of getting a business
to grow than me,' says Fields with typical pudency."
Melanie Warner, The New Black Power, Fortune (New York), Aug 4, 1997.

"The art of life has a pudency, and will not be exposed. Every man is an
impossibility, until he is born; every thing impossible, until we see a
success."
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), Experience.

I'm a little crazy this morning--a little frenzied. I got up at 6 am to finish my proofreading project, then went to meet w/ the author for an hour before coming to work an hour late. Things are a little backed up here from yesterday (I took off sick). I'm somewhat caught up now, but I'm a little harried--a little wacky. I sort of feel like I could have a heartattack or a rapture or something, which is weird because I haven't even had that much caffeine today. But it's all good, baby -- it is all good.

BTW, did you know that buy.com has trademarked the phrase "It's all good"? It's true. Kinda weird, no?

I think the cable guy was supposed to come by today and check my connection. My Internet connection went goofy last Tuesday, so I called Comcast and found that the only available appointment was for today from 8-12. It started working later that night, but I forgot to cancel. Oh well, serves 'em right for jerking me around like that. "What? A four-hour window? In only a week? For joy! That's service, baby."

Cripes, I hope they don't try to charge me for that. I might just have to kill a man.

Yes, oh yes, I'm going home and listening to Black Sunday. I haven't heard that album in YEARS.

Despite what I wrote this morning about being a bit wacky, a bit frenzied--and all of that was true--I had a very good day today. I was crazy busy, but the day somehow went smoothly (except for the occasional computer crash); I was able to deal with a lot of different things and finish everything I started. Also, the professor I did the freelance proofreading/editing project for was quite impressed and said that I might find myself employed soon. I'm not quite sure what he meant, but it was good to hear. He's apparently a big deal in the school of management and the political science department, so I guess he's likely to have a lot of projects to throw my way. And this was an actual book-length project that I was able to tighten up quite a bit--very good experience to get.

So yeah, damn right it was a good day--one when I felt very grateful to be doing something I enjoy at a place where I'm very lucky to be. Now if I could just get a decent paycheck I'd be ON. Of course, I have the mighty union on my side, so no doubt I'll be mackin' like hell any day now. *cough*

And I didn't even have to use my A.K.
