where's my mule
Jun. 7th, 2003 03:53 amMuch, much fun. Perfect weather, traffic wasn't bad, show was great. If I'd known how the thing was going to be set up, I wouldn't have bought a ticket through Ticketmaster. I just walked right in--never picked up my ticket or anything! Coulda saved forty bucks. Oh well, it's good to support the band, I guess.
Afternoon really worked out well--I went down to the farmer's market at Union Square and got a few plants, then headed back up to 72nd St. and parked. Turned out I was really on the wrong side of the park, but it was a nice walk through Strawberry Fields. Just kind of followed my ears until I found the place, and when I walked up Robert Randolph and the Family Band were jamming on Purple Haze. Sounded quite nice--they were thumpin'. That's the first time I've seen him, though I have some shows that he guested on and I've got The Word project he did w/ the guys from North Mississippi All-Stars. Kick-ass pedal steel player. In the middle of the Purple Haze jam, Warren Haynes came on and played, and then they went into another tune. Short break, then a nice, two-hour Mule set. I think that's the first time I've seen them do only one set. Would have liked to have seen a typical marathon, but I guess they had time limitations in the park. (And shit, two hours ain't bad, they've just spoiled me with previous shows.) George Porter, Jr., of the Meters, is a badass on the bass. I've seen him with the Mule before, but this was the first full show I've seen him play. That guy's sick. Oh yeah, and Bernie Worrell from P-Funk showed up to play on one tune!
I have renewed respect for people who can get good photos at concerts. My first attempt was so-so. Here are a few.
