Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] bohunk!

I'm really bad about remembering to check lj friends' birthdays, but I just downloaded the latest version of the Semagic client, and it pops up a message when your friends have birthdays! (Once per day, and you have to go to the "edit friends" option.) There's also something called "secret love" or some such nonsense by which you can keep a list of journals that you like to check but don't want on your friends list. Dunno how that works yet.

Mississippi State head football coach Jackie Sherrill hands little Gracie Hammons, 1, from Jackson, Miss. back to her parents after taking a picture with her during Fan Day Saturday afternoon at the Humphrey Coliseum. MSU will open the 2003 season versus the Oregon Ducks on Saturday at 8 p.m.

Something about this is really troubling--mainly the fact that the little girl is only a year old and already they're outfitting her in cheerleader gear, but also something about the way ol' Crackie is holding the child. This is the same guy who had a bull castrated in front of his team as some sort of perverse motivation before their game with the Texas Longhorns. I don't suppose that's really relevant to what's happening in this picture, but it gives you a little perspective on Crackie's creepiness.

Have I written about the whole toddler-as-cheerleader thing? It freaks me out. People always say how cute little girls in cheerleader outfits are (well, football-minded people, anyway), but I think it's kinda disgusting. Like, hey, let's thrust these fucked-up gender roles on our kids just as soon as we goddamn can! I started an opinion article on this when I was in school, but I decided not to go through with it. Southerners get very touchy when you start questioning their traditions, particularly when it comes to football. I got enough flak over the whole plastic-deer hunting thing.

Hey, remember that LJ Commune idea I came up with a few months ago? Is anyone up for that? We'll probably need a whole shitload of land, preferably in the South, and a blue fuckin' ton of startup money. C'mon, people, open up the piggy banks. I need a new gig.

Oh, applicants for the LJ Commune should be aware that [livejournal.com profile] elizalouwho will be filming the whole thing. She has the curious notion that it would never work. ;)
