Dec. 18th, 2002 03:38 pmAre there any female holiday . . . um . . . mascots? You know, like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or the Great Pumpkin. Wait, what sex is the Easter Bunny--does it matter? I'll bet I'm missing some sort of obvious spring fertility thing here, but I was never very good at all that mythological stuff. Anyway. Oh, and I'm talking about real, modern-day characters--don't give me of that old, disproven Greek and Roman shit or whatever other kinda kid stuff you got up yer sleeve. And don't say Mrs. Claus--you know as well as I do that she was only created to divert attention away from the fact that Santa is always hanging out with all o' them nutty little man-elves.
Hey, look at this article about the blasphemy of such characters! For some reason the logic strikes me as really funny.

Date: 2002-12-18 01:09 pm (UTC)Hey, what was that cartoon witch--Helga? Wait, that's Hagar's wife. Or wait, Broomhilda, maybe? I can picture her, but I can't quite call her name.

Date: 2002-12-18 02:07 pm (UTC)But seriously, what a moron. I mean, she's basically saying that Christianity is no more plausible than the story of the freaking TOOTH FAIRY! (Of course, some people would agree with that, but they're probably not the sort she wants on her side . . .)

Date: 2002-12-18 10:22 pm (UTC)As far as female "mascots," do they have to be American? In Sweeden, they celebrate Saint Lucia (http://www.scandinavica.com/culture/lucia.htm)'s Day at Christmastime.
Regardless, I think you are correct in noting that there is a serious dearth of female holiday heroines.
