Oh, man, this is good: examples of bad writing taken from manuscripts before they were edited here. You'd be astounded at how many highly intelligent people can't write.

Real quotes from real YUP books (before--usually--editing):

Girls raised in working-class families were more likely to have premarital intercourse as adolescents than girls in middle- and upper-class families because they were more likely to marry at an earlier age, and premarital sex typically preceded marriage.

Probably one of the most immediate causes of adolescent births is intercourse itself.

But he [Tennesee Williams] emphasized his ignorance of his own intentions while writing. Something inside him seemed to be struggling blindly for release and, by getting furious, making itself clumsier.

In the final scene [of A Streetcar Named Desire] Blanche fantasizes about dying at sea after eating an unwashed grape.

The genocide of whole populations.

The voices of Brooks's <"Gay Chaps at the Bar" express their hostility toward the girls left behind--sweethearts, pianists, unfaithful correspondents.

Those who have lived up to [fidelity] are genitally inhibited, obsessional, or given to magic gestures.

Coming to the United States seems to have liberated [Horney's] expansiveness.

Through the New School, [Horney] enlarged her circle of friends, which already included many well-known refugees and social scientists.

Silliman had the good fortune to be a family friend of Yale's President, Timothy Dwight, so that despite the fact that he knew no chemistry whatsoever, when, in 1801, Yale's Corporation voted to establish a Professorship of Chemistry and Natural History, Dwight happened to meet Silliman on the street in front of the college buildings and, on the spur of the moment and on the spot, offered the Professorship to Silliman. Silliman was surprised, embarrassed by what he understandably viewed as his obvious inadequacy, and, of course, elated. President Dwight noted all this and responded.

Because detached people are likely to entertain the attitudes of the subordinated solutions, their values are highly contradictory.

This is one way of distinguishing between self-effacing people and perfectionists, who share many values and sometimes look alike.

I must have been depressed by disappointment. There are some non-barking dog pieces of negative evidence for this.

As sex and semen replaced blood as the sacred binding powers of social life, the courtiers began to move out of the old castles into new types of houses, the <"stately homes" of today's National Trust.

From humble circumstances, bricklaying, and, like Shakespeare, without university education, though he went to Westminster school, Jonson made himself the voice of classical correctness in letters and prospered socially and financially in the times of James and Charles I beyond any other writer.

A number of studies have found that the higher the score on the stressful events index, the greater the probability of subsequently developing physical illness, psychiatric disorders, depressed mood, imprisonment, and pregnancy, among other variables (Holmes and Masuda 1974; Kaplan 1983; Dohrenwend and Dohrenwend 1974 and 1981; Bieliauskas 1982; Elliott and Eisdorfer 1982).

Eligible households had to include an adult eighteen years of age or older who was (1) presently married, (2) presently living as a male-female couple, (3) divorced or separated within the past two years, or (4) a single parent with a child under eighteen living in the household.

When Socrates observed Athenian citizens enacting law through agreeing "in an idea of equal utility common to all of them severally," he must have begun "to adumbrate intelligible genera or abstract universals by induction" (1040).

Sunday schools were another educational innovation intended for the poor which were borrowed from England.

Cheated of his birthright, without a pottage of lentils to appease him, Shaw's fury, unlike Esau's, remained unabated.

A sharp xenophobic cutting edge with dire consequences emerged.

It is, indeed, because it is precisely the Five Books of Moses, and only they, that constitute the text of a Torah scroll that I can assert that it is just this part of the total biblical text that forms the basis of the life of the cultus as the grounding myth at the root of the entire Western Judeo-Christian tradition that derives from it.

So close, so real, so human, so great.

In respect to their styling and construction, storehouses, or warehouses, and factories, that is, structures primarily committed to large, undivided expanses of floor area for storage, machinery, or for displaying merchandise as distinct from countinghouses, were also forerunners of the modern office building and skyscraper.

Given such leaden manacles, how then did he take the dross of his life and spin out that golden web of glorious comedy and visionary thought?

The pace of technological and cultural change had definitely quickened during the Middle Stone Age, but it paled before what was about to unfold.

Part of its wealth was grounded in agricultural produce.

The Arab advance sped westward through Mauritania.

In addition, the Amhara were the closest of the major Christianized peoples to the Muslim traders moving up the Awash valley. Thusly, did religion and commerce combine to place the Amhara at a newly emerging core of regional developments.... The core revolved around Amhara and Begemdur.

The court in Gondor was little more than a figurehead frozen in place.

...the traditional Songhai core where the veneer of Islam hung thin.

By the 17th century the slave trade had western Africa in a vice-like grip. Persistent demand in the Arab world kept the trans-Saharan routes active, however it was the rapidly growing demand in the Americas that eventually exerted by far the greatest force. The cumulative human impacts of this trade were enormous and deserve the continuing attention they illicit.

The royal Ethiopian presence literally evaporated.

The king's eyes followed her every movement and watched how her costume revealed the suppleness of her figure and the smallness of her feet.... Already she was driving all other thoughts from Ludwig's mind, and he hardly dared to think that he might convince her to stay on in Munich.

[On Stalin after his wife's suicide] He was now truly alone, a dangerous emotional situation for the leader of an immense country with daunting problems.

Reger's polyphony has long been celebrated as multivoiced.

Whether clothed in the austere scientistic clothes of late nineteenth-century positivism or in the metaphysical garb of post-Hegelian idealism, philosophers were dressed for success with scientists or theologians, but they couldn't even break the ice with ordinary folks.

There is the implication that they don't have the right to rock their own can of worms.

It was a known fact in Washington intelligence reports that Tai Li had murdered his mother twice.

In order to tap the relevance of committee bills to individual members' bill-specific interests, I used face-to-face interviews with personal staffers and administered structured survey instruments.

While many scholars are highly critical of U.S. behavior at this time, arguing that the military during this period established many of the fundamental and avoidable problems that were to manifest in later years, virtually all analysts agree that without the U.S. presence, South Vietnam would have fallen.

If I am correct, the inherent contradiction in looking for "feminist ways of knowing" makes it so hard to find anything that will qualify that the seekers must become desperate for results; a hungry woman will eat anything.

They mined the Stuart annals for tales of tyranny and its resistance by republican martyrs.

With due consideration for taphonomic indicators of transport and redeposition, fish remains are an indicator of the presence of water.

[Jonathan Edwards's] members were drifting back into their old ways. Edwards is circumspect in this letter to his Boston sponsor...
To his former member, caught in a troubled situation, Edwards...

Although Erskine's correspondence to Edwards is not known to exist, fortunately a number of letters from Edwards are available.

Eventually, he followed the custom of a half-hour of wood-chopping a day, although he was never as gregarious as he thought he should be.

Johnson was entertained by an English scientific elite who took proprietary pleasure in Darwin's stunning hypothesis. Johnson and his wife were passed from one great Englishman to the next.

The taste of Coca-Cola, or the sight of MTV, forever turns the soul, like the bloody kiss of a vampire.

For almost everybody, one is either born a man or a woman; but to be born a woman does mean condemned to darn socks and wash dishes for some lout.

Men and women are different in ways that are obvious to the naked eye.

In the play's representations of love, we find an exploration of the diverse forms of experience that we intuitively link together as forms of love: the love among family members, between rulers and subjects, and among erotically charged individuals.

Perhaps especially in the United States, rural life is viewed as inherently bucolic.

In his teens he somehow developed an interest in painting; there is no way of telling how.

They seem to suggest that rites of violence did contribute to the cohesiveness of each antagonist; and by bringing internecine conflict to a head and suppurating it at a given time, contributed to societal continuity.

I think they impact on women more onerously. By this I mean the fact that women's appearances in "important" places like parks, plazas, and public buildings are strictly limited by the barbed wire of convention, disarticulating women from public life.

Such sexual spatialization with all of its warps and woofs, has been approached in many ways in the past twenty years.

I can think of others who have also bravely stepped into the breach of Mediterranean sex codes.

The crowd erupts as one.

As stated, I have already implicitly suggested this in the Introduction, but now I want to discuss it more explicitly.

Just as the left-right asymmetry leads humans to view the world, including the domain of politics, in terms of a horizontal dimension, the up-down distinction leads us to classify both physical and social reality in terms of a vertical dimension.

For our purpose here, one main difficulty stems from the fact that the meaning of the left-right distinction is defined in terms of two dimensions, for there is no guarantee that the two will go together so as to form the pair . . .

Despite various interrelationships between specific ideological and pragmatic priorities, conditioned by changing political, ideological and formal contexts, a general principle of the consistency of Bolshevik verbal refraction of reality can be characterized a the principle of teleology. . . . Epistemologically, the teleolgical view, if imposed upon reality with maximal consequentiality, requires a radical refocusing of the cognitive criteria.

Paz's words help to explain the typos of the chingada, the violated Mexican mother, who lurks somewhere in Kahlo's paintings and identity.

The egg, like O'Keeffe's earlier stone, has been elevated, exhibited as the germ of creation.

O'Keeffe and rocks conversed with each other visually and metaphorically over decades.

Still, once back in Victoria, doubt erupted again. She worried it, like a tongue against a loose tooth.

The time frame over which this work plays out is bifocal.

Many aspects of Puvis's paintings prevented them from being described as a totalizing synthesis.

I never thought that Silliman sentence would end. Oh, the commas!

What the hell is a "warp and woof"? Are they talking about those barking dog records?

Wasn't it some science fiction writer who first coined that phrase? Woof can also mean a "basic or essential element or material" according to the dictionary. I like my reference better, though.

For real. Almost makes me wonder whether I really want to pursue this editing thing! But at least it tells me that there's no shortage of stuff that needs editing. :)

I know you've read that passage once already, but FUCK that made my toes curl. . . literally! I've never read something that elicited such a drastic involuntary physical spasm . . .
