Answers behind the cut. I've done this thing two weeks in a row--I feel like such a spaz. So I'm done working for the week, what can I say?

1. Do you remember your first best friend? Who was it?

2. Are you still in touch with this person?

3. Do you have a current close friend?

4. How did you become friends with this person?

5. Is there a friend from your past that you wish you were still in contact with? Why?

1. Do you remember your first best friend? Who was it?

Yep--Evan F. He lived up the street from me when we lived on Maple Drive.

2. Are you still in touch with this person?

Nah. He started in public school but soon went to Starkville Academy (the private school paid for by pathetic assholes who get a little bit of money and think they're hot shit because they can send their kids to private school, where they can get a subpar education and not have to be educated with blacks). At about the same time, I moved across town, so we never saw each other. He did return to the public schools in ninth grade or so, but he'd blossomed into a full-blown wise-ass little prick (as opposed to a lovable wise-ass like me). He was a big drinker in high school too, so we drank together a few times, but were never really friends again. Oh yeah--weird thing: he and Fool actually became big buddies in high school and the few years right after. I always found it strange. Evan was this sorta hot-shit guy (or so he thought) who was always concerned with having lots of money and a sky-high coolness quotient, and Fool was . . . Fool. It was weird--Fool was basically a giant suck-ass when it came to Evan and tried to be just like him. But that's another story.

3. Do you have a current close friend?

No one here in town that I'm really close to. I have some people at work whose company I quite enjoy, and we've gone out and done stuff, but I can't say I've developed a really deep relationship with any of them. But as I feel more comfortable here, it could happen. I don't really go out to places where I'd meet a lot of other people.

I will say that I've developed some friendships on this nutty little webthang that I value very much, and I feel quite close to some o' y'all. Of course, some of you I hate like poison, and I'm taking yer ass out, oh yes oh yes you can believe that mang.

Oh yeah, and my closest friend from home I haven't actually seen much in the last ten years. That happens when people are shuttling around the country between places like Mississippi, Oregon, Virginia, Texas, and Connecticut. We email and talk a good bit, but we really should get together one of these days. He's married and now expecting a child, though, so who knows when we'll get a good chance.

One other close friend that comes to mind is a person I used to work with at the paper. In a lot of ways I thank her for lighting the fire under my ass that helped me figure out what I was going to do in life. I was writing yesterday about events playing off one another so that it looks like things were meant to happen, and her calling me and offering me the job at the paper set a lot of that off. That made me decide for sure to go to grad school and get off my ass to do an application for an assistantship, just at the time the opportunity at the honors program was opening up. If I hadn't worked at the honors program, I probably never would have met Jim Wilcox or heard about the publishing course, and if the publishing course hadn't happened, no telling what I'd be doing--probably working for a newspaper in Mississippi. Not that that's so terrible, but I wouldn't choose it over this. ANYWAY. She and I keep in fairly close touch and always get together when I'm home, and we've always hit it off quite well.

4. How did you become friends with this person?

Um, see above.

5. Is there a friend from your past that you wish you were still in contact with? Why?

Sure, several actually. My stepbrother Grimmett, who's not very good about keeping in touch. I guess I'm not either. Jason, who's been my friend since kindergarten but I haven't heard from in quite some time. Several of the guys I went to treatment with, if only to know that they're doing OK. Wouldn't want to know so much if they're not doing OK, which according to statistics many of them probably aren't. I guess the one guy I KNOW what's happening with is Sheron, who was a 19-year-old kid who came in as a total hardass and left a seemingly changed person. I saw him every once in a while after we got out--in fact he lived a couple of streets over from me--and he was always glad to see me. Seemed happy. But he started drinking again pretty soon, and the next thing I knew I was reading in the paper about his being arrested for armed robbery. Apparently he carjacked a guy, stole his cash, and pistol-whipped the shit out of him. I forgot the exact sentence he got, but I know he's going to spend most of his life in prison.

Fuck, how did I get off on that? I gotta find the intensity knob on my brain and turn this bad boy DOWN, yo.
