Yikes. Remind me not to move to Pennsylvania.

erm

dude

don't move to Pennsylvania

Indeed. Between their overzealous highway patrolmen (I'm still smarting from that speeding ticket last year) and their vigilante citizens, I wouldn't last a week!

That's actually pretty sad. It's weird the kids were using a paintball gun. So much for tradition!

[identity profile] wickedflea.livejournal.com 2003-09-04 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, it is sad. When I first saw the story I thought, wow, throwing tomatoes at cars sounds like something I would have done. And then I thought, wait, I HAVE done that!

[identity profile] wickedqueen.livejournal.com 2003-09-04 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
But Flea, I live there. :)

While he shouldn't have shot him, those fucks shouldn't have been throwing tomatoes, either...I understand the rage that ensues when shit hits your car!

I doubt if it was an Amish person, but when my uncle worked in Lancaster, PA (home of a bazillion Amish) someone dropped a whole PUMPKIN through his windshield from a railroad bridge and he broke his jaw and fucked up his knee...

Those damn Amish! :)

[identity profile] wickedflea.livejournal.com 2003-09-04 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm, good point. Perhaps I can don a disguise and refrain from throwing things out my car window when I come to visit. ;)

A PUMPKIN?!? Damn. That sounds like something we would have done in Mississippi. Except we probably would have used a watermelon.

"Holmes County has what is believed to be the world's largest population of Amish, who do not believe in modern conveniences such as electricity and automobiles."

they do so believe in them - they know cars adn 'lectricity exist, they just choose not to use them. grumble grumble

[identity profile] wickedflea.livejournal.com 2003-09-04 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
Well said, podner.

just strolling through....

"...who do not believe in modern conveniences such as electricity and automobiles."

"The group told the sheriff's office they had been throwing tomatoes and firing paintball guns at passing vehicles."

electricity, cars... don't need 'em. rapid firing paint ball gun... neccesity. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to live there.

That happened in Ohio, not Pennsylvania.

[identity profile] wickedflea.livejournal.com 2003-09-04 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
ACK!!! Obviously I need to get a copy of Reading Comprehension for Dummies. I'm not sure I'd be able to understand it, though. Maybe they have a VHS version . . .

[identity profile] electrcspacegrl.livejournal.com 2003-09-04 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you read Amish, skipped over Ohio, and assumed Pennsylvania. I think most people assume all the Amish are in Pennsylvania although that article said Holmes County in Ohio has what is believed to be the world's largest population of Amish.

[identity profile] wickedflea.livejournal.com 2003-09-04 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's exactly what happened. I am Ignorant Boy.

Youngsters hide in cornfields
Proven by the next paragraph, this line is a crock of shit.

23-year-old Steven L. Keim
So the adult men of the county attempt to kill people by throwing tomatos at their moving cars.

Residents are reeling from shock, unable to understand why anybody would retaliate so violently.
And they're surprised that somebody would shoot randomly into a corn field after somebody tries to kill them.

The vehicle turned around and drove past the cornfield again.
After giving them warning that they would do so.

Residents say the community will be nervous until the shooter is caught.
I think residents of the county should be nervous until their adult citizens stop trying to kill motorists.

It's not that I condone shooting into fields or even driving cars, but if a community believse in "eye for an eye" then how can they condemn shooting randomly into a field when people in the field are randomly trying to kill them? Why not just stop both activities and have both sides join the civilized world?
