So [livejournal.com profile] nonamejane knew that The Black Dahlia, the play we went to last night, was about a brutal murder. What she didn't know was that we'd encounter onstage humping, full-frontal nudity, and subject matter including incest, bestiality, and animal mutilation.

Do I fucking know how to PICK 'em or WHAT?!? Damn, I'm smooth. ;-)

Seriously, we had a great time, and the play was quite good if fairly shocking and a little confusing. I'm never very good at following crazy twists and turns in plots, and this had a ton. But all in all, we had a wonderful time on our night of High Culture.

Next stop on the tour should be back in RI--I owe [livejournal.com profile] nonamejane for driving all the way down here to see me two weekends in a row!

Oh, I forgot to mention the crowd at the play--it was weird. Now, I admittedly have a strange sense of humor, and sometimes I laugh at things that other people don't find funny--but some of those jokers in the audience last night were TWISTED. They laughed at the strangest things. Case in point: one line in the play was about a policeman killing several "jigaboos," and when the line was delivered, some freak in the back busted out, "HAW HAW HAW!" So much for political correctness on the college campus, huh? Jeez.

Yep, based on that case--1940s actually. It was pretty cool--film noir and all that, but FUCKED UP!

Was there seriously a videogame? I may have to, errr, find it too--I'm curious... :)

I'm not sure if this is true but I heard that the Angry Thoreauan editor used to live at the same hotel as the Black Dahlia killer.

I was curious what you two might think of this play; I was unaware of it. It sounded sensationalist and just shock value stuff from your remarks. There has been an underground with a lot of interest in this subject for quite some time. I posted this comment to nonamejane. (http://www.livejournal.com/users/nonamejane/114903.html?thread=297943#t297943) The reviews of the CD are interesting and I think zero in on the fascination this story has for people. I had a girlfriend who lived that exact same life in Hollywood. She had come from New Jersey with the same dreams, some talent, and some successes. She didn't make it either. I'm kind of haunted by this sad and sordid story, it reminds me of her. The jazz album Black Dahlia by Bob Belden is wonderful: rich, dark, and beautiful.

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I think of the play. The production was pretty stunning, and sometimes it's hard to separate the production values from the merit of the play itself. I dunno. There was definitely a sensationalistic aspect that bugged me a bit--but at the same time, it's theatre, so why not go over the top? And the extreme aspects of the case have a lot to do with the continued interest in it, so . . .

I dunno--like I said, I'm still mulling it over. I imagine you'll probably get to see a movie version one of these days. :)
