Fried pickles with ranch dressing, baby. Ohhhhhhh yeah. God, I haven't had these in years. So trashy but so good.

Um, yeah, I'm from the deep South. You wanna make somethin' of it?

Wow. Never heard of friend pickles. What other crazy things do people fry in the deep south?

Just about anything we can get our hands on. Sweet potatoes, mushrooms, zucchini, eggplant, green tomatoes, okra, etc. I guess some of that stuff is also common outside the South. Oh yeah, and then there's the NASTY stuff like chitlins, pork rinds, and cracklins.

Oh man! I'm a huge pickle fan and I've never tasted these. Dill I suppose? What do you put in the batter? I've got to try this!

Are those sweet pickles or dill? Whatever the case, I didn't realize they were so messy. I'm guessing that's part of the charm. :)

What are cracklins?

From: [identity profile] wickedflea.livejournal.com
Yep, dill, baby! All I do is mix a bunch of black and red pepper into flour, toss the pickles in the mixture till they're coated well, and deep-fry 'em until they're golden brown--2 min. or less, probably. Dipping the pickles in an egg/milk mixture before the flour might help the crust stick to the pickles a bit better, but it's not really necessary. Killer stuff!

don't forget about hush puppies, which are one of the greatest things in the world, just because they're nothing but fried breading

Now you know, I am from semi-small town South Carolina. My mother was born in Itta Bena, Mississippi. Yet somehow, some way, I have NEVER heard of fried pickles....ick...
