Egad. Earlier in the week my boss's husband's 94-year-old grandfather felt like he had something in his throat and was choking, so they took him to the hospital, where they gave him a cursory look and told him it was nothing. He was unhappy with the lack of concern they showed, but he went on home anyway. And sure enough, he went to sleep and asphyxiated because of the thing stuck in his throat.

That poor man! His poor family!!! Did they not pay attention because they thought he was 94?! Are they going to sue or anything?! Holyfuck that is really sad.

you have to know *exactly* what's wrong before you go to the doctor because a lot of them have no clue.

how can i make this broad statement? my ex-husband teaches premed at a very prestigious (read expensive, high test scores) school known for their medical profession and he has always said that his biggest nightmare is to wake up in the emergency room, look at his doctor and recognize one of his dumbass former students who should not have become a doctor.

I know, it's TERRIBLE. I don't know what they're going to do yet; I don't imagine they've decided. But yeah, it's just chilling.

Exactly. Definitely seems justified in this case.

Yikes. Makes me think of the George Carlin routine where he talks about the fact that somewhere in the world is the World's Worst Doctor--and someone has an appointment with him TOMORROW! Not to make light of it--it is scary. And it's REALLY scary that he went in there and TOLD them and they STILL didn't check him out right. Gahhhh.

oh sweet jebus. that is so unbelievably sad. and to jump on the lawsuit bandwagon, the doctors in this day and age wonder why their malpractice insurance is so high? Blammo. The purest example I have ever heard.

Another reason why I decided to get out of med school. Not that I didn't think I would be smart enough to run an xray but that the idiots in my department/rotation (had I become a doc) would be more worried about thier golf game or being on call for 48 hours at a jag then their patients.

It goes back to that old saying Question Authority and Get a Second Opinion.

I am so sorry for her and the family.
