I've noticed something in New Haven and New York: I see a lot of seemingly normal people talking to themselves while they're walking down the street. Where I'm from, the only people who do that are obviously bananas. Is that a regional thing or more of a rural vs. urban thing? I'd thought the former, but it's probably the latter. I guess people in urban areas feel more anonymous, so they just don't give a fuck who notices. It's much more likely in small towns that people will tell your friends and family that they saw you muttering to yourself in the socks aisle at Wal-Mart.

This is the kind of thing I think about on the bus home.

They are talking to themselves, and it used to raise questions for me as well. Then I moved back to Houston and it was suddenly huge, and people were muttering to themselves, including me.

I just started writing a short story where the narrator talks aloud to herself all the time. She thinks it's normal.

Some of it is the academic thing. They're working out sentences in their head. (Yes, I do this occasionally, but have mostly trained myself to stop - because I grew up in a small town.)
