OK, so I've been having problems with my home desktop for several months now. I even bought a zippy new bare-bones system cuz I was due for one, and transferred a lot of the old hardware to the new machine. And I STILL was getting crazy crashes and dumb stuff happening. I could NOT figure out what the deal was.

I now have reason to believe it was the fucking MOUSE. I don't know how; I don't know why. But that's how it looks.

Computers are gay.

have you reloaded? i mean, completely reformatted?

[identity profile] wickedflea.livejournal.com 2005-08-17 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, a few times. But last night the mouse cursor would just stop and start, and it crashed a couple of times w/ critical errors, so I changed to a ps/2 mouse and everything improved. I got a new usb trackball today, and everything's zippy as hell.

it could be a IRQ interrupt conflict might need to change some reserve IRQ settings in the bios for the USB ports. write out what things are on what IRQs there are 15

Man, those USB mice are trouble, I tell you what.

A couple weeks ago, my work computer wouldn't boot up. I had a feeling it was the el cheapo keyboard I was given. Sure enough, I was right. I think I'd be using the damn thing for maybe 2-3 weeks. Gah.

Sounds like your computer guys were trained the same place mine were. :\

computers suck.

[identity profile] wickedflea.livejournal.com 2005-08-17 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. I'm gonna start getting on the internest the old-fashioned way, with an abacus.

...Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Damn, I usually remember to add that.

Have you tried going to the mouse manufacturers website to see if they might have updated drivers?

[identity profile] wickedflea.livejournal.com 2005-08-17 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's a Kensington trackball, and I had the very latest drivers from their website. I've probably had the thing for six or seven years, so I guess I was due for a new one. I can't figure out why it would have been causing the computer to go nuts and crash--I would think it would just not work very well if it's going on the fritz--but there definitely seems to have been a correlation.
