I turn 34 on Oct. 1 and I'm not happy about it and I have a wish list and I am a wh0r3.

I keep hearing about people getting shot and mugged and stuff in New Haven. Like, you know, more than usual. This is why I'm afraid of getting shanked. What's going on up in this piece?!?

Do I know a Sharyn Allen? She just sent me a PDF of Biloxi pictures and mentioned that she's going to the MSU game this weekend, but I've not the foggiest idea who she is. Damn this addled brain of mines.

I want waffles.

Werd of the day:
backronym (BAK-ro-nim) noun

A word re-interpreted as an acronym.

[Compound of back + acronym.]

In a backronym, an expansion is invented to treat an existing word as an acronym. An example is the PERL programming language whose name is now explained as an acronym of Practical Extraction and Report Language.

When naming, sometimes a suitable name is chosen and then an acronym is retrofitted on top of it: USA PATRIOT Act (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct
Terrorism). The clunkiness of the expansion is a quick giveaway. How about forming a backronym for ACRONYM itself: A Contrived Result Of Nomenclature Yielding Mechanism?

Often, backronyms serve a useful purpose as mnemonics. For example, see Apgar Score: http://wordsmith.org/words/apgar_score.html

"Some people think chad is an acronym standing for Card Hole Aggregate Debris. But Kevin told me about the cyberlegend that chad is a backronym."
Marsha Mercer; Chad Finds New Meaning in Post-election Verbiage; Richmond Times-Dispatch (Virginia); Nov 19, 2000.

Egad. I had no idea that USA Patriot Act is an acronym. It reads like something I would have made up in debate class.

The hurricane bitches can taste my johnson. Fuckin' butterflies.

How long has the "shanking" been going on downtown?
Pre or Post Katrina?
Because the only thing that's really changed, social climate wise, is that New Haven took in about 600 stranded people from the New Orleans projects as storm relief.

Maybe some of them are angry and feel that, now that they have nothing left of their former life, they have nothing to lose?
Or, maybe that's what they did for a living in NO (shanking, that is)?
There were certainly enough con artists wandering Bourbon St. every day.
That's why we never traveled it.

I actually had the con "I betcha I know where ya got yo shoes!" tried on me the one time we walked down Bourbon.
I answered with "Eat my ass!".
After that, we avoided Bourbon all together.
I don't need that kind of shit on vacation.

what's wrong with 34? my friend elizabeth really loved it, even though she developed a brain tumor during the last month of it. if you don't do that, you should consider it a successful year!

Good question--I think it started happening before Katrina, though, and definitely before we started seeing evacuees. And I know they've arrested some local kids for some of the stuff: http://www.newhavenindependent.org/archives/neighborhoods/dwight/index.html

Some dude actually got me on the shoes-on-Bourbon-St. thing one time. I wasn't about to give him any money, though. Hell, I was 16--I didn't HAVE any money! That was just before the Republican national convention in '88. That was a weird scene seeing those fuckers running around the French Quarter.

Aha! Mystery solved. :) Yep, they came through just fine, and thanks for sending. It's positively chilling to see them, but somehow it helps me grasp everything. Mind-boggling.

I wish I could go to Starkville this weekend too--I'm jealous! Go to Sonny's and have some BBQ for me. And Oby's for an oyster po-boy. And Brewski's for some crawfish. *sigh*
