wickedflea: (chicken neck)

I went over to Starkville this weekend to visit w/ my mom, who's spending a few days there, and my grandmother and aunt. It was a nice visit. I so love the early spring down in this area, and it's so good to be able to bum around in the homeland. Starkzekistan ain't for everyone, but I like the place. And it's come a long way even in the few years since I left there.

Saturday night I cooked burgers for the homies. My Great-Uncle Ray of the Tiller came over and enjoyed his hamburger. It was only after he finished that Mom told him that the burgers were made of bison meat rather than beef. He didn't take it very well. "Is that red meat??" he asked. Yes, Ray, bison is red meat, as is beef. "Well, I'm not supposed to eat red meat." Ray. You just ate a hamburger that you thought was beef. Bison is practically the same, only lower in fat. "But I'm not supposed to eat red meat." DUDE.

Ray's a weird cat. Once we were having a discussion about how objectionable the president is (one of the few things we can agree on politically), and he went into some thing about how Bush had made some statement in support of Islam. Ray thought that was the craziest thing in the world: "But Islam . . . Islam worships humans!"

Anyway. Sunday I went to the baseball game at the friendly confines of Dudy Noble Field. Best place to watch a baseball game in the country. (OK, so I've never been to Fenway or Wrigley. Cut me some slack.)

Sunday I took the scenic route home and checked out the, um, scenes.

+ a few others

Dude, is that some kind of heavy equipment metal sculpture or something?

So they just leave that trailer by the scoreboard all the time? Hee. Never a dull moment in Starkville.

There's a town in California called Gordo. It's only about a block long. For serious.

Your pictures are so hilarious. I'm a big fan of the "BOILED PEANUTS" one and also the ART/POPSICLES one.

Man, I looked at that thing for five minutes and STILL couldn't figure it out. Obviously there's a crane, but the other part attached to it baffled me.

Hehe! Gordo, AL, doesn't even have a stop light, I don't think.

Yep, people bring out their trailers and old pickups and leave them out there all season to grill and party at. They call it the Left Field Lounge, but it goes all around the outfield. Very cool tradition, actually!

Hehehe, thanks! It took me a minute to realize that the "ART" sign used to read "NAPA AUTO PARTS."

Who knows? That damn Ray has some pretty peculiar notions, and you can't talk him out of any of them.
