I saw Little Children this weekend. It's a good movie, but GAH. I kept thinking about it all weekend. Jackie Earle Motherfucking Haley was, as always, amazing. He's always been creepy as fuck, but now that he's old and haggard, he's all the creepier--he looks so much different, but he still has that distinctive voice that I remember from his teen roles. Crazy.

It's cold as FEET in this damn office. I'll bet you anything it's below 60.

I loved the book- I LOVE Tom Perrotta as I think we've discussed (not that my literary opinion comes close to equalling yours) but I thought the movie was dreadful.

Yeah, I want to read the book now. I was just reading about the differences between the book and the movie, and it certainly sounds like the filmmakers took a LOT of liberties.

Hmmm, but now I'm looking up Tom Perrotta, and he co-wrote the screenplay, so he's somewhat responsible. But I'll definitely check out the book--I'm intrigued.

I'm with you on the weather issue. I'm a spoiled Californian. I whine when it's below 60.

Maybe I made it up that we discussed Tom Perrotta- Yale graduate? Wrote Joe College, a novel about class relations at Yale in the late 70s, and Election, the novel on which my FAVORITE MOVIE EVER is based? Let me know what you think. I couldn't put the book down.

I do remember that now! I know I watched Election on your recommendation and then meant to look for the book--and then, apparently, I forgot all about it. :\ I'll try to remedy the Perrotta situation. :P

Ugh, I hate the cold! That was a major factor in my moving back south after being in CT for five years.

Usually, though, it doesn't bother me if it's a little chilly inside. But it's RICOCKULOUS in here! *brrrrr*

Theater or Netflix? Never heard of it.

Cold? Use look for something you can use as kindling and start a little office-campfire. The recycling bin is a good place to start looking. You guys work with books, there's got to be some around. Tech manuals are also good. Your co-workers will thank you for warming them up. It's ok to burn books as long as it's not political or religious.

Little Children hovers close to my to-be-watched list mostly because it stars J. Connelly. The sad reality of adaptation is that certain elements that make a great book would make a dull movie. Reference James Bond. Or, the utterly cursed attempts to adapt A Confederacy of Dunces (one of which would have starred, Lord have mercy, Will Ferrell as Ignatius - curses upon Drew Barrymore!).

Then again, the odds of a screen writer being an incompetent moron are high.

Example:

Studio: "You'll notice in your contract that it says you'll be getting a pittance of a royalty on DVD sales. Is that cool?"

Writers: "Heh. DVDs. Who buys those?" *sign*

Sadly, there's very little Connelly to be seen. :( Her part's small and not memorable.

I've thought a lot about a Confederacy movie, and ultimately I'm quite glad none has ever surfaced. Like you mentioned, there are just too many parts of the book that wouldn't translate--for instance, Ignatius's journal entries, letters, etc. And I think that Ignatius's speech, as much as I love it, probably works better on the page than it would coming from an actor's mouth.

And frickin' Will Ferrell! What an abortion that would have been. I remember hearing about that and wondering if anyone connected with that project had any grasp of the Ignatius character at all. He's fine for what he does, I suppose, but gimme a break. I also heard Philip Seymour Hoffman mentioned at some point. He'd be a much better choice, to say the least.

Netflix--it was just in theaters last year, though, and Jackie Earle Motherfucking Haley got an Oscar nomination for it!

And yeah, I'm TOTALLY gonna start burning some o' these books around here! Shit, I may end up setting some o' these PEOPLE on fire around here. ;)
