I was in The Strand today (never a good thing, as it always results in my spending too much money) and noticed that Kenny Shopsin was going to be appearing there tonight for a discussion and signing of his new book, Eat Me. Shopsin's restaurant has been famous for years for its huge menu of oddly named dishes, Soup Nazi-esque rules, and frequent profanities from the chef. I haven't been yet, but I learned about the place a few months ago from the documentary I Like Killing Flies, which dominates. Anyway, I went to the book signing tonight and heard Shopsin cite Giacometti on the creative process and then call the audience a bunch of motherfuckers. :D

Check the flour on his shirt--he musta come straight from the restaurant. :D

Oh, and the best part was that I got to sit next to an old lady who asked me who I was shooting for (er, myself) and told me that she was the author of How to Grapple with the Pineapple and don't Swallow the Avocado Pit and What to Do with the Rest of it. (???) Here she is giving a Strand employee a photograph of Powell's Books in Portland. (??????)

I love the look on the employees face.

I just went to The Strand the other day and I was kind of a lot less impressed than I thought I would be. Maybe because I had just gone to Powell's a couple of months ago and I was super impressed with that? I don't know. The Strand just seemed super crowded and not as exciting as I anticipated.

I dunno exactly what it is about the Strand, but I love it. It's not that they have just absolutely every book you could ever think of, or that it's such a comfortable shopping experience (although at least it's cooler inside now than it used to be). Maybe it's the prices, maybe it's the funkiness, whatever, but I always come out weighted down with books. :)

1. They didn't have one single copy of "The House on Mango Street." How is that possible. I had to go to Barnes and Noble and pay $9 for one. Forever I will curse you The Strand.

2. I think also, the day I was there was the day we had that monsoon. So, inside it was packed and I was wet and there were just people milling around. I didn't even get a chance to move around in there because there were just so many people. Maybe I'll give it a second try. :)

Heh, yeah, that's the thing--you can't always go there looking for something and know you're gonna find it. You just have to go in and come out with something you didn't even know you wanted. :)

Oy, yeah, the monsoon. I think that was the day I got into the city. I'm still not dry yet.

I want to meet that old woman! She looks like the kind of person who could talk for hours and I wouldn't realize how much time had passed until she got up to pee in the toilet.
