My pop got hit by a bus.

Well, his car did. And he's fine. But his car's totaled. He got a generous settlement from the insurance company, and he can afford to get pretty much whatever kind of car he wants. He's not a Mercedes/BMW/Volvo kind of guy. He's always driven Oldsmobiles and Buicks, and that's probably the kind of thing he'll go for again. But he's unusually open to looking at other options this time. What kinda cars should he consider? He likes big cars, and he probably won't want an SUV or anything like that. I won't allow him to get a Lincoln because I really don't think we need another 78-year-old Lincoln driver on the road. And I'm really not big on Ford products anyway. I dunno, Honda Accord? Toyota Camry? Honestly, those are a little smaller than what he's used to. And shit, maybe all that bulk on his LeSabre helped him walk away from his wreck unscathed, so I'm a bit reluctant to put him in something smaller, if only for the sake of his confidence.

Any thoughts?

Nissans are pretty good. I loved my little Sentra and Sir's Altima is still going with 250k+ miles on it. I hate Honda/Toyota products :P

I agree. I've loved my Nissans. I paid $4k for a used Altima and she didn't die until she had almost 300k miles on her. I had her for 5 years and the ONLY problem she ever had in all that time was a pinhole in some tube that cost $40 to fix. I drove her across the country, and through the mountains, and up the coast, really put her through the ringer. Nissans consistently rank highest in Consumer Reports, and a 4-door Altima is hefty and made well -- not huge but not small at all. Check the latest Consumer Reports for the rankings for the last few years' models to see which year rated highest -- often a used car from a good year will perform way better than a new one. I've never had a problem with any car that I researched in Consumer Reports before I bought it.

Another idea is the Toyota RAV-4. It's like a tiny SUV and gets great gas mileage. My mom got one a couple years ago and it's given her a ton of confidence on the road. She feels safe in it, and I think older folks in particular should be up higher so they can see better. If he doesn't like Toyotas, I'm pretty sure Honda and a couple other brands (maybe even Nissan?) make very similar mini-SUV's, although I don't know how they rank so (again) check Consumer Reports.
