Last night, I saw part of a 60 minutes segment about TiVo and similar things -- the computerized VCR-type boxes that record television shows on a hard drive. Mike Wallace was interviewing this family who had one, and the mother was saying that now that she can watch her favorite shows again (which she never had time for before what with the kids and all), she truly feels like Thelma (or whatever her name is) again. What kind of freak defines herself based on the television shows she watches?!? Answer: the all-too-common freak. (Thereby making her not a freak, I guess...)

Then the father said, "Yeah, I watch probably twice as much television as I ever used to." And the daughter (probably 12 or 13) piped in, "I agree -- I used to play outside all the time, and now I never play outside." By this time, I was squirming in pain and had to leave the room.

Yes, I'm aware of the irony in the fact that I was sitting there watching television and judging these other people for watching too much television. But I really don't watch that much TV. And goddamn, at least I'm aware that it's a mind-rotting abomination.

Excuse me while I stare at this computer monitor for hours.

Oh my god, I saw a couple minutes of that, and I saw the little girl say that and we all cracked up hysterically.

Leave it to kids to tell it how it is, you know.
