I had a Vanilla Coke at lunch today. I can't really recommend it. It's like super-syrupy creme soda. Shame on me for succumbing to the hype.

Yeah, that scam should have put me off Coke completely, but I just could never get with the Pepsi. If I were a real man, I'd drink RC Cola.

I'm as Southern as Tupelo Honey.

I was raised in LA... my mother's family is from Coushatta, and she still lives in Natchitoches, where they filmed "Steel Magnolias". I graduated from HS there, and from college at SLU in Hammond.

I just moved north in 1997, the drawl hasn't worn off yet ;-)

Oh, cool! I've been to Natchitoches and Hammond (years ago). Just moved from Mississippi (near Tupelo!) to Connecticut last year.

It's weird about the accent -- some people tell me that I don't have much of a drawl or that it "isn't bad" (!), but others ask me where the hell I'm from after I've said only two words to them.

Know where Bogalusa is? I just south of there in Bush for about eleven years and worked in Covington. My best friend moved from Covington to Waveland, MS a few years ago.

I try not to let my accent get over too much but when I am teaching I tend to fall into the pithy similes (jumping like a frog in a hot skillet, etc) It's Grandpa's fault, I swear.

LOL... it's quite popular with Cajuns. I had a Coon Ass sticker on my old Dodge ;-)

It's not really seen, as far as I can tell, as derogatory, though I'm sure it was originally meant to be. It's more... affectionate? Coonie is another term they use.

I know in some places in the South Coon or Coonie is a term for blacks, but not in South LA (G)
