SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- For the first time ever, a federal appeals court declared the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional Wednesday because of the words "under God" added by Congress in 1954.

I'm all for it, but people are going to FREAK OUT over this, especially in this climate of ultra-patriotism. Fuck 'em, though. I always hated the pledge of allegiance anyway. We're supposed to have freedom to dissent, right? So why are we making children stand up in class and recite this weird-ass incantation that they can't even understand? And (not just because of the "under god") it's always seemed way too much like a prayer to me. But hey, that's right up our alley, right? Despite the lip service we pay to separation of church and state, we LIKE our religion and our government and our education all twisted up together like a little weiner package. Hell yeah. And little pink houses for you and me. Whatever that means.

Oh, and does anyone else remember praying in public school? I distinctly remember praying as a class in first grade. This would have been about -- what, '76, 77? That's after it was declared unconstitutional, right? Not that we Mississipians give a shit, though.

I'd just zone out during the Pledge of Allegiance. Now it seems kinda weird, because it implies, "I promise not to be a communist" or whatever. When I was in grade school, I remember thinking, "What's a witchit?"

i remember in 3rd grade, my class had a snack and the teacher had us all bow our heads and pray before we ate. this was in 1980 or 81.

I just finished saying to someone that though I was happy to see this, I'd be made ecstatic if they went after it on the grounds of its cohersive patriotism next.

i've always called it the flag prayer.
at my elementary school, the birthday kids got to go to the office and lead the others via intercom. no one shared my day, so i had to pray alone.
damn, i hated myself for doing that.

It was pointed out in another discussion of this same subject over at [livejournal.com profile] verkan_vall's LJ that the "under God" part has been part of the pledge for less than 50 years, and was not part of the original pledge.

So go, folks, in getting it re-edited.

However, I would like them to slash "republic" while they are at it, that part really gives me heartburn.
