Well, here I am in Mississippi (or, as we natives say, Missippi). I'm in the Butler Hall lab with my laptop, abusing the MSU bandwidth as I have so many times before.

Got in last night about 6 central. We made good time yesterday, but the first day was kind of fucked. Took entirely too long to make it 670 miles (to Abingdon, VA). We stopped in Parsnippany, NJ, to eat at a Fuddrucker's, and getting back on the interstate was a total nightmare -- the freaking signs saying "to 278" were pointing in the wrong direction, so we spent twenty minutes or so fucking around Parsnippany trying to find the interstate we'd just been on.

Then, once we'd managed to get through Joisey to Pennsylvania, I was accosted by some uniformed drone who insisted on giving me a yellow slip of paper called a "speeding ticket." 75 in a 55. Hundred and forty bucks. Bastard. That's twice in the last fourteen months or so that I've been a victim of the speed limit changing from 70 to 55 all of a sudden for absolutely no reason.

Rest of the trip was uneventful. I made my date with the Waffle House in Staunton, VA, Thursday evening. My waitress had eight teeth, but she served a mean omelet.

Yesterday, we stopped in Knoxville, TN, for lunch at Corky's. They have good BBQ, even if it is a sit-down restaurant run by Whitey. Next two stops on the great southern BBQ tour of aught-two: Sonny's here in Starkville and Dreamland in Tuscaloosa.

I got a big ol' bag of crawfish from Brewski's a couple of hours after I got here last night. In my first forty-eight hours or so since crossing the Mason-Dixon line, I've had Waffle House, BBQ, crawfish, a Route-44 Coke from Sonic, and a big piece of my Grandmother's pound cake. Life is good.

It feels a lot better being in Starkville than it did in December. I came down for a couple of days then to see Dad, and no one else was in town. It was kinda depressing. My Grandmother and aunt are here this time, though, so it does feel like I'm back home.

I'll knock around here 'til Monday or Tuesday, I guess, and then we'll go up to Mom's in Chattanooga and celebrate the 4th there, which means more BBQ. Sorry, vegetarians -- I respect your choice, but it just ain't gonna happen for me. :)

I'm trying to download some stuff from my machine at home, and it's taking forever. Stupid upload cap.

I guess it happens all along the interstates. The one last year was in south Mississippi. The speed limit changed to 55 because I had entered an urban area and didn't realize it. I still don't know what happened the other day; I looked up, saw the cop pointing his radar gun at me, and THEN saw the 55 sign. And we weren't even in an urban area, so I don't know what it was about.

Sounds like a setup to me.

The cops were out in full force yesterday. Maybe it's because July 4th is less than a week away? They made no secret of having radar guns tho.
