My work computer sucks so bad. I thought my computer in my previous department was bad, but it was so much better than this. This one's not only slower, but it also crashes all the time. My old home computer (which I finally got running again by going back to the second of its three motherboards) would be perfect for me here. I'd like to donate it to myself, but that idea didn't go over too well when I brought it up in reference to a monitor; the head computer dude said that, while it was a nice thought, "we should be able to furnish something suitable." Um, yeah, but . . . you're not.

Oh well. Besides, if I did donate it to the press, university red tape would undoubtedly result in its somehow being re-routed to someone else. "Thank you for your donation of a computer. Our policy dictates that such equipment, after being assessed by the proper authorities, be awarded to the neediest employee on campus. At this time, that person is Mrs. Ethel Schwanz of the Institutional Efficiency and Fuckhound Administration Department. If you find fault with this ruling, you may send an official Grievance Form (form FU-122) to the attention of Mrs. Ethel Schwanz in the Institutional Efficiency and Fuckhound Administration Department."

(Sorry, I don't know where that came from. I've actually never had much trouble w/ red tape here. Leftover aggression toward university bureaucracy from my days as a student, I guess.)

"Please fill out this form to get this other form."

"Where do I take this?"

"You'll need another form to figure that out."

That reminds me of the time they switched "guidance" counselors on me without saying anything. I didn't find out until I went to my original counselor. Hell, they were no help anyway. I could've looked through the course catalog myself. Your tax $ at work...

Yup, I always hated having to go see an advisor to schedule classes -- so much so that I did a double major but didn't officially register as a major in the second dept. until the last summer term before I graduated (so that I wouldn't have to see two advisors).

"Hi, I'm your new advisee. Sign this so I can graduate next month."

Ha!

>>That sounds like something I would've done. Fight the system!

I think I was talking about Usenet vs. file-sharing. Usenet (also known as newsgroups) is a good way to get a lot of stuff, but it's kind of a bitch to learn. Did you ever hear of discussion groups like alt.tv.seinfeld or whatever? It's like that, except there are groups where people post mp3s as binaries. I feel myself descending into geekhood as I try to write this . . . Check out http://www.mp3-faq.org/ and see if it makes any sense.
