OK, I've had it -- this computer has got to go. Does anyone know of a failsafe way that I can fry it so they'll have to buy me a new one? It can't look suspicious, of course; I have to be able to get away with it. I can't just chuck it out the window or fill it full of Mountain Dew. (Do they even have Mountain Dew around here? I'm a Co-Cola boy myself.)

Short of that, how 'bout some help diagnosing the problem with this heap? It doesn't actually crash, but it periodically stops accepting input until I reset it. That is, the programs keep running, the clock keeps changing, and if I leave it going for long enough the screen saver comes on. But the mouse cursor won't move, and none of the keys does jack -- not ctrl-alt-del, nothing. And there doesn't seem to be any pattern as far as what programs I'm using when it happens. And no, our computer guys are no help. They only thing they know how to do is say, "Well, what did you to it? You must have done something to it. Fred didn't have that problem with this machine six years ago, when we installed the operating system on it."

*waits patiently*

Yeah, I didn't think y'all would be any help. That window thing is looking more and more like an option.

peanut butter toast can be a good ally in times like these.
crunch, drip, drip, crumb, stick, oops got some in the disc drive...

mmmmm, peanut butter toast . . .

Yeah, cool -- I can even start inviting other people over to my desk for peanut butter toast breaks! The more people I have milling about, the greater the chance that a slice will find its way up in my motherboard.

You can always try the defragment disk feature, and/or deleting the temp files, especially in IE. That shit can really suck the life out of your hard drive. If these suggestions doesn't work, just buy a really big magnet. :)

I defragmented on Friday, but I hadn't thought of the temp files thing. I'll give that a shot and start looking around for magnets.

Sometimes my keyboard at work will crap out, but I just unplug it and plug it back in. I dunno what the story is with your mouse.

What's screwy about IE is that the temp files clog shit up even when you put the file space slider near the low end.

Quite obviously your input drivers are failing. Quite obviously the problem is you're running windows. But if you really wanted to know what I would do, it's reinstall the O/S. Once windows breaks, I run out of solutions. (I assume these aren't USB keyboard/mouse?) The only other thing I'd do is make sure there's no APM stuff turned on in BIOS, windowz, etc.

No, really I'd smash it. :)

Thanks -- I'll check that stuff in the BIOS. They're just regular ps/2 devices. And yeah, reinstalling the o/s would probably be the best thing -- I just dread doing it (or worse, making our tech guys do it). Well, yeah, the BEST thing would be to smash it. :)
