Well, I added two more states to my list last night: Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Met up with [livejournal.com profile] dangerpest and headed to Lupo's to see The Les Claypool Frog Brigade. It was fun to see Les again; the last time I saw him was when Primus opened for Anthrax and Public Enemy in '91. I just can't help but smile when I watch that guy. We were less than into the opening acts, but that was just as well--it gave us a chance to hang out and talk shit. "Talk shit" isn't accurate, actually--we had a really good conversation about a lot of things.

Les didn't dedicate the song "Long in the Tooth" to us, but he might as well have; one of the common themes of the night was how old we feel. :) I can't get over the difference in the scene between 1991 and 2002. When I saw Primus in Birmingham back in the day, people were having a great time, but they were slamming like crazy, riding the crowd and all that. None of that last night--it was all dreadlocked hippies making themselves dizzy! Not that there's anything wrong with that if it's what you're into, but . . . I dunno. Of course, I stopped having any fun slamdancing a long time ago, so I don't exactly miss it, but it was definitely weird not to see it happening at all. (And of course I'm aware that Les's music is not exactly Black Flag, but it's still pretty heavy and definitely capable of inciting some friendly, violent fun.)

So thanks to [livejournal.com profile] dangerpest for a fun time last night, and we'll definitely have to get together again--I hope next time with [livejournal.com profile] thebelljar. Oh, and dp, I loved the covers disc you made for me! So many of those songs I've always thought would make great punk or metal songs, esp. "Paint It Black." And I've always thought that the Misfits' "Skulls" was a tender love song at heart, but I never imagined that it would be Evan Dando who confirmed that notion with an acoustic cover. Awesome! The CD made the drive home quite enjoyable.
