Spanish question

How do you spell the word that sounds like "essay"? I think it means "friend" or something close. Cheech used to say it a lot, like "What's happenin', esse?"

"esse" is how I've always seen it.
This makes me wonder why you want to know.

Because I like to say it and it bugs the shit out of me not to know how it's spelled. And I want to start using it in my professional correspondence. :)
