Wow, I've been meaning to update for a while now, but there's really been nothing to update on. Work's kind of leveling out, kind of seeming routine now, which is good. I mean, there are still new things to deal with each day, but I don't feel like I'm wandering around like an idiot.

Finally got my driver's license yesterday, for the low, low price of only 89 bucks. !!! I'm not even going to think about trying to register my car for a few months... the horror of the DMV is too much to bear, and I'm too broke too afford it anyway. I just bought a car tag in MS before I moved, so I may as well keep it a bit longer. One more note on the DMV: you know you're in for it when you walk into a place like that and there's a concession stand.

I have been so freaking lazy today. I went to sleep about 11:30 last night, woke up about 8:30, read for a couple of hours, and went back to sleep until about 1:30. I'll probably regret that when I try to get to sleep tonight, but oh well -- it felt really good while it lasted.

One thing I'm distressed about is the fact that I seem to have less operating money than I did before I got a real job. I get paid, go to the grocery store, come home, find bills in the mailbox, and scratch my head as I try to figure out how to make it two more weeks on a buck and a quarter. For one thing, I think I need to adjust my tax withholding, because they're taking out a hell of a lot of federal tax. It'll be nice when I get the refund, but I kinda need the money now. I was thinking I'd like to go into NYC over Thanksgiving weekend, but it looks like I'll have to wait. Bah.

Just a thought (maybe two)

$89 just for a license? Here it was $20, last time I got it. Can you change your registration by mail? I did that for just the driver's license last year.

Yeah, I think it was like $36 for the eye test -- high-tech shit, don't you know -- and 50-something for the actual license. I think the most I've paid for one previously in MS or VA was like $35.

And they seem to enjoy making everything difficult here; you not only have to physically go in for registration, you have to have your car inspected twice -- separate tests for emissions and safety. At the DMV. Anywhere else I've lived, you had that done at licensed service stations, but no.... It's a wonder that anyone does anything by the book here at all, considering all the trouble.

Damn - $36 for a lousy eye test? Maybe the governor's mansion needs repairs?! Ugh.

>>Yeah, around here you can go to a gas station or a dealer. Of course if you had to go to the DMV, no one would ever be able to drive. Oddly enough, the last time I went there, the line for registration had maybe 20 people waiting, if even that.
