I cannot answer your poll effectively. While I don't do the salt thing, my momma does, so of course I can't say you're crazy, that would be implicating my good Southern upbringing.

You pick a good melon in different ways. For a cantaloupe or honeydew, you sniff it and check the stem end for ripeness. If the seams are too green or it smells green, don't buy it, won't be sweet or soft.

For watermelon, thump it. Should have a nice hollow sound, not a dull sound. Make sure nobody has cored it anywhere to check ripeness(the bastiches).

i have an aversion to fruit...i have this weird thing about the texture of food that i eat...anyway...yeah...my my mom and brother put salt on watermelon...
