Eh, turns out it was just the cat, Snowball II! (Best I can tell, anyway, and it looks like the episode first aired last month sometime.)

If I remember correctly, many, many snowballs passed on during that episode. And maybe some other pets. It was rather stupid and depressing that the Simpsons would use such a pathetic ruse.
