Wow, Jan. 2 and I'm already starting the year. I'm used to lounging around the house until at least the 5th or 6th. In a weird way, though, it does feel good to be back at work.

I had a very nice holiday break, especially the first few days in Chattanooga, where I did the kind of lay-on-the-couch-reading-Bukowski-and-watching-crap-like-football-and-"Behind the Music" holiday relaxing that I do so love. My couple of days in Starkville were sort of weird, though. It was good to see Dad, but sort of depressing at the same time. He just stays so isolated, and his house is in such a horrific state. However, he seemed to be in good spirits, and I think seeing that I'm doing well was good for him. I guess the time away made the fact that he's 70 and alone more striking. We talked about him coming to see me sometime in the spring, so I hope he will.

It was nice to be in the land of 95-cent gas; wish I could have stocked up somehow. I also brought back a bunch of cigarettes, which are also much cheaper down south, and Mr. Pibb, which you can get in Virginia and Alabama but not in CT (and evidently not for much longer anywhere). I forgot to get any fucking barbecue on my way out of Starkville, though! I had the cooler stocked with ice and got on the highway anyway. Arrrgggh. I did at least get to my favorite rib shack for lunch one day. The ribs were great as usual, but I was very distressed to find that they're still (since a few months ago) serving only wretched Pepsi products (soda issues are very important to me) and that there were some honky-ass managerial types milling about the place. If they take down the "no farting" sign, somebody will burn, by god.

Obviously, I'm not getting much done at work today. I have a few things to do (though I did a pretty good job of preparing for vacation), but I don't know where to start. It feels like I've been away for years. Oh well, time for lunch.

Heh -- actually, I was never that into Chick-Fil-A. My town was too remote and impoverished to merit one, I suppose. Come to think of it, we didn't even have a Waffle House until a year or so ago... I guess I discovered their exquisite cuisine on road trips.

Holy shit, this cola thing has me searching the web. You gotta check this site out. Make sure you go through all the chapters (!) so you can get a load of the kickin' tunes.
