OK, I don't know that for sure, but I sure suspect it. Dig this. Here's Rick back in the day.
Here's current-day Rick.
I don't buy it. I'm a big Rick James fan from way back, and in recent years there's been something that's just off about him. Rick just hasn't been Rick in a long time, you know? But I think I know what happened. Rick's NOT Rick. Remember that whole trumped-up false-imprisonment-and-burning-the-chick-with-the-crack-pipe thing that he went to jail for? Nothing but a ruse. A ploy. A scam. I think that anti-Funk crusaders in the government assassinated Rick and conspired with the conservative media elite to sell the American public a bill of goods. Rick James was never in prison--he was murdered. His body was kept in a vault in Roswell, NM, until it could be buried underneath the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland. But somewhere along the way people started to find out about the evildoings, and the Powers That Be decided that they had to cover their tracks by producing a NEW, pitifully inferior Rick James. And it's that impostor who is now enjoying fame as a result of the Charlie Murphy/Rick James True Hollywood Story (full version there, not the half-ass one on the Comedy Central site). It's faking the Funk in the highest degree, and it's time someone spoke out.
If I disappear soon, you'll know what happened--I'll have been wiped out. Silenced. But that's a risk I'm willing to take for the truth.
