I haven't read the book, but I enjoyed the movie. A little slow, perhaps, but that's kinda what you expect. And it was pretty moving at times. Jeff Bridges was really good. Kim Basinger was bearable--I don't really understand how she got to be such a respected actress, but she was OK. I don't think you'd go wrong with it; like I said, I haven't read the book, but I wouldn't think it's a gross bastardization or anything (unless you count the fact that it's based on only the first third or so).
