Here are some pictures we took while Mom and John were in town last weekend. These are in front of Sterling Library.

I never did do an update about last weekend. I took off from work early and took the train into NYC. It was raining like hell, which didn't make it much fun getting from Grand Central to the hotel, but anyway. They were at the Frick Museum, so I just laid back for a while at the room and waited for them to get back. We had tried to find a play to go to, but nothing we saw listed really grabbed any of us, so we didn't end up getting tickets for anything. We ate dinner at the Grand Central Oyster Bar, which we always enjoy. Raw oysters and soft-shell crabs in effect. From there we went back to Times Square and killed a little time before going to the movie theater. I wanted to see the director's cut of Donnie Darko, but the 10 p.m. showing was sold out, and I wasn't gonna be able to hold out for the 12:55. So I went with Mom and John to see The Door in the Floor, with Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger. I quite enjoyed it, even if it did leave me with that "lick my pussy and my crack" song in my head for days.

The next day, we headed to Canal St. in search of cheap shit. Mom got a handbag for my grandmother and some other stuff. Then we went up to Union Square, had lunch at . . . some brewery place I can't remember the name of, and shopped at the farmer's market. I got a big-ass rosemary plant that I'm hoping I'll be able to keep alive for more than a couple of weeks, tomatoes that turned out to be very tasty, and basil. From there we took a cab to the hotel, got the car, and headed to Zabar's. I can't go to New York without making a stop for smoked mozzarella spread and olives at Zabar's, ya know.

That night we went out to Branford and had stuffed lobster at Lenny's. Their stuffed lobster kicks so much ass. Like buttah and all that. And we were even able to avoid the one prick waiter we sometimes get, which was an extra added double bonus.

On Sunday I took the folks up on West Rock to show 'em the view of the city, and then we drove up the coast along Rt. 1 a bit. Stopped in at R. J. Julia bookstore in Madison, which is a really nice independent store. I picked up Dry by Augusten Burroughs, which I've already sped through. (And yesterday I bought his Running with Scissors.) Then we went out to the beach at Hammonasset for a few minutes and headed back. We strongly considered going back to Lenny's, but I sorta wanted to get back and settled in, so we decided to get pizza back in New Haven. On the way home, we stopped by the press so I could show John where I worked, and we walked around campus a bit. Finally we ended up at Dayton St. Apizza and got some pies to bring home.

So that was about it--they headed out the next morning and went to Pennsylvania to pick up my aunt, who was headed back with them to go to the family reunion in Mississippi. I wish they could have stayed longer, but I'm really glad they came. I enjoyed getting to show John where I live, and I guess I hadn't seen him since Christmas, so that was good.

Oh yeah, here are another couple of pictures I took.

I'm glad you had fun with the Mom and John. Wasn't your LJ nickname "Frickinfrackin" at one time?

Today I saw a sticker for a website called I Love Lenny.com. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

What's the story behind Dayton St. Apizza? Isn't it an East Coast thing to say "apizza"?

I'm still not sure about the apizza thing. I heard somewhere that that's the way they say it in Naples. It always makes me think of a stereotypical Italian accent: "A-pizza-pie-uh!"

Frackinfrickin is my AIM handle. :)

Thanks. :) Mom's a retired English professor. As long as she doesn't remind you of Professor Fuck, it's all good. ;)

Cute icon!

I have the shirt you're mother is wearing in those pictures! I also have that artwork on a coffee mug. Edward Gorey rocks.

I didn't even realize that was a Gorey drawing! When I first saw the shirt I thought it was a B. Kliban cat.
