Date: 2004-08-26 08:15 pm (UTC)Then I passed there and saw that shrine tonight. Didn't put two and two together till after I got home, but it turns out it was all about this:
NEW HAVEN — While grieving friends and relatives of Daniel Herring Wednesday continued to build a shrine on the Whalley Avenue sidewalk where he died, police tried to reconstruct how he was thrown off his motorcycle.
Herring, 23, of uncertain address, was killed Monday at about 10:20 p.m. as he was riding by the McDonald’s restaurant at 1094 Whalley Ave.
Police said they are uncertain whether or not Herring collided with another vehicle.
"We had no direct witnesses come forward Monday night," said Police Lt. Christopher Kelly.
"We’re looking for the public’s help."
Anybody with information is urged to call 946-6316 or use the anonymous TIPS line: 866-TIPS (8477).
Police Officer Robert Crisco, who reconstructs motor vehicle accidents, called the case "a big jigsaw puzzle. There are many variables."
Crisco said Herrick lived at 24 Admiral St. in New Haven, but a check showed there was no such address.
Meanwhile, on the sidewalk where Herrick landed, about 50 candles have been placed as well as bouquets of flowers, stuffed animals and a message: "Rest in peace, D-Love." This was Herring’s nickname.
"He was hard-working, not a street kid," said a woman who had known Herrick for years. She declined to give her name.
"I last saw him at a cook-out around the 4th of July," she added. "He just gave me a hug and said hi."
The woman said Herrick was wearing a helmet Monday night, "but it split in half."
Kathy Robles, who lives across the street from the accident site, said she and several of her family were upstairs at their home Monday when "we heard this boom."
She said they ran outside and saw Herrick lying across the street on the sidewalk.
"By the time we got over there," she said, "there was already a puddle of blood."
Robles said Herrick was not talking or moving.
"My sister, who’s a nurse, tried to take his pulse. She couldn’t find a pulse at all."
Robles, whose boyfriend knew Herrick, said he had been planning to get married soon.
