Got up early for me on a Saturday and went out knocking around. Picked up Gov't Mule's new album. Not too knocked out by the material so far, but it'll probably grow on me when I hear it live. That's usually the way with them. They hadn't been playing any of the new stuff live until the album came out, so the recorded versions probably won't compare to the fleshed-out live versions.

Went to the bookstore and actually didn't buy anything except a couple of magazines. I need to stop buying books and start reading the ones I have all over the apartment.

Then I went to see Garden State, which a couple of different people had recommended. Good movie for a day like today, and I enjoyed it. I started to sneak into Shaun of the Dead after that, but I was too afraid of getting busted. Then I thought about going to see A Dirty Shame downtown at 7, but I made the mistake of sitting down at the computer, and now it's five till. I might go down and see Napoleon Dynamite at 11. Not sure.

This was the first movie I've gone to see by myself in years. I'm pretty sure the last one was Jackie Brown.

Now I'm crying because I just put on red beans and rice (recipe in comments) to cook, and because of the chopped onions my eyes is going crazy. I went to the Empire State Building, and because of these glasses I can't SEE, goddamnit. /solrosenberg

Geez, this makes two nights in a row that I've cooked. Alert the media. And y'all come git some red beans in a few hours when they finally get soft. It's good stuff if you like it.

Damn. I was feeling pretty good till I made the most boring post in the history of the world.

Dude, I've made the most boring post in the history of the world so stop trying to steal my thunder.

I would love to come have dinner with you and get me some of that southern cookin'! Share with me your recipe? Do you do cook the rice w/the beans or on its own? You got some ham hock in that pot, mister? Huh, do ya?

Rice separately. No ham hock tonight, but it would make it even better. It's Mom's recipe, which, under the terms of our agreement, I cannot reproduce without labeling "Definitive." :P So here goes:
Mom’s Definitive Red Beans and Rice

1 lb. red beans
1 medium onion, diced
4 medium garlic cloves, diced
1 medium green pepper, diced
1½ tsp. dry mustard
1½ tsp. oregano
1½ tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. thyme
1 T. Tabasco sauce
3-4 T. vinegar (preferably balsamic)
2-3 T. Worcestershire sauce
1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
36 oz. water
½ lb. ham, cut in large chunks (optional)
1 lb. smoked sausage

Soak beans several hours or overnight. Drain and mix well in a crock pot with remaining ingredients, except ham and sausage. Cook 3-4 hours on high, turn temperature to low and cook 3-4 hours more. Add ham and sausage during last hour.

Serve on a bed of hot rice with diced onions and jalapeno peppers (optional).

I've taken to cooking this in a pot on the stove instead of in a crock-pot, but it still takes a hell of a long time for the beans to get soft. My grandmother claims that omitting the vinegar cuts this time down, but I've never noticed much of a difference, really. I need to figure out a good method of preparing the beans so they'll get soft quicker. All I do is soak them overnight. I think there's some method where you soak them and then boil them, or boil them and then soak them, but I can never remember what it is.

Anyway, it's all worth it. Just keep adding water and cooking till they're good and mushy. :)
