My desktop has been giving me shit for days, even after I spent the weekend formatting and reinstalling everything. It keeps freezing up like mad if I'm doing something processor-intensive. I blew a shit-ton of dust out of the fans and everything in the case today, and it hasn't locked up again. Maybe the fans weren't working well and it was overheating, I guess. I hope that really solved the problem, but I'll be surprised if it did.

And my DVD player in the bedroom went belly-up today. Hate mail.

I've had the same problem with my computer for the past six months or so. I periodically clean the fans and it does help for a while. It's shocking how much crap gets in there. We have two dogs and two cats, so I'm sure that doesn't help.

Cool, I hope blowing out the case helps me out too.

Hey, I was glad to learn where you've been hiding out. I miss reading you when you're on hiatus or displaced. And I love the look of your site--you're seriously talented, as I think I've mentioned. :) I hope you and Runt Funny are doing well!

I'd never cleaned my computer out in ... oh, four years. So it was disgusting. Every now and again it freezes up on me, but it's really rare now that I've given it a few good cleans. I was convinced at first that it was a virus and I reformatted everything, but cleaning did the trick. Anyhoo, good luck with that.

Yah, I'm a freak with the journal thing. I'm going to try really, really hard to only post over there. Posting in my livejournal is more a boredom thing than anything else for me. It's just sad. I like having my own little page that I can control. :)

yeah

sometimes dust build-up can conduct electricity, joining circuits that shouldn't be joined, sometimes causes lock-ups, sometimes fries a circuit, most of the time it does nothing

If ever there were a candidate for dust problems, it would be me. So fingers crossed that that'll be the extent of it. =)

I wonder if it might be spyware or a virus.

Well, I ran Norton, Ad-Aware, and Spybot, and it was still happening--even after I'd reinstalled the system. So I don't think it's that. But after my laptop caught some sort of mailer virus over the xmas holidays (despite the fact that everything's updated and I use Firefox and webmail on it instead of MS stuff), I don't rule anything out.
