wickedflea: (chicken neck)

I was just thinking about southwest Virginia, and I remembered something I haven't thought about in a loooooooong time. When I was a manager at the Radford BK, I had this tie that my mom bought me as a joke, and I wore it quite a bit just to see what reactions I'd get. It had a U.S. flag motif, and right in the middle of it was this big-ass fucking motorcycle. Not once did I ever have anyone laugh at my tie, but many times I had someone say, "Right on, brother," and ask to shake my hand. And that was in 1995 or so. If I wore that tie today in southwest Virginia, I'd probably get marriage proposals.

I'm probably more at risk for that now when I drive through VA with my "Whitey Will Pay" bumper sticker.

That's one of the reasons I can't move back home any time soon. Not that I wear cheesy ties (I do, but around my head like Rambo) but because I'll get shot at, driving around in my car with my "I think, therefore I don't listen to Rush Limbaugh" bumper sticker.

I think I'll bring one of my gay friends to my high school reunion this spring, though. That should make it worth the trip.

Haha! Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't know how I would handle it if I moved home. There's a lot I'm homesick for, but it would be hard to stomach the politics after being up here among more liberal folks.

Forgive me if you've told me before (you probably have), but where in VA are you from? And how long have you been gone?

Well, thankfully my parents and sister are uber-liberal. Which is good. It balances out my grandparents and uncle who, I'm sorry, might as well have a shrine to Bill O'Reilly in their living room.

I grew up in the northern part of the state, in Fauquier County. I lived in Hume, which is near Front Royal and Warrenton and Culpeper. Well, by "near" I mean "within 30 miles". I moved to L.A. a little over 5 years ago for no good reason and I've been trying like hell ever since to get out.

A firned of mine's parents once bought me an airbrushed Gerry Garcia tie that had blue lightning all down it.
It was a very nice gesture but it's funny what people will buy you when they have no clue who you really are.
I guess they just thought that since I was a musician or something that I naturally liked airbrushed lightning ties.
I'm sure that's a really common assumption... ?
