Typically I've always listened to CDs--I even made audio CDs from mp3s I downloaded and listened to those instead of the files. But since I got my iRiver, I've been listening mostly to mp3s. We'll see how that all shakes out after the honeymoon is over.

Yeah I was going to say I usually do that too.. But listen to them on my CD player that plays mp3's. I am not hip yet enough to have an MP3 playa.

Hollllllaaaa!

I'm actually kind of split on some of these: I listen to CDs and mp3s pretty equally. At work I listen to CDs by the album, and at home I shuffle all the mp3s I have on iTunes.

I listen to mp3's, but I can't stand the fidelity loss. I know most people can't hear it, but I also work at a movie studio and I went to a music school and studied music production. The funny thing is if I listen to cd's that I grew up with on vinyl like the Beatles or Led Zeppelin, then I can hear the fidelity loss there as well, but I don't have a turntable. But I would much rather rip the entire cd into .wav files and listen to the uncompressed audio. It is much different. I have set up experiments that anyone can hear the difference. Digital audio is about convenience, not fidelity. Anyway, my job is to argue about this subject for about half of the time I am at work.

Right. I used to do a lot of live-music trading, and mp3 was a big no-no. It was all about lossless compression. I totally agree with you about the convenience vs. fidelity question. With a lot of mp3s, though, my ears honestly don't notice a difference, though I'm sure I would hear the difference if I A-B'ed them. Sometimes I can hear the degradation with files ripped at 128kbps.

Anyway, yeah--I'm not going to get rid of my CDs, but it sure is nice to have several hundred albums in a little box. =)

Reason I haven't gone to mp3s is: first, I am a Luddite in terms of technology, and second, I do hear fidelity loss, though God knows how.
