Also, this is probably old news for a lot of you, but it's funny. I heard about it a couple of weeks ago, but forgot about actually going and reading the site until my boss reminded me yesterday. College student offers money to random person on AIM to write a paper on Hinduism for her. Random person, who turns out to be a sketch-comedy writer, agrees. Hilariously bad paper is sent, student never pays, student turns paper in to professor, and hilarity ensues, all chronicled in The Laura K. Krishna Saga.

I've been laughing over that Laura stuff for awhile. I'm considering making my students next fall, if the site is still up, read the website for a homework assignment. I know I've been approached to write papers, and I too have been tempted to punish the person for it. I think that site would be more effective than anything I could say to try to stop my students from doing it.

I think that would be a good assignment!

Have you had much trouble with fishy papers being handed in?

I personally haven't dealt with it yet, but a lot of the second year TA's have, and I've dealt with someone coming in the writing center and giving me false pretenses to get me to try to help their Adv. Comp assignment. I just know once I'm teaching comp 1 and 2, I'll have at least one case if not 15.
