Why are DJs considered very hip in some circles, yet cover bands are almost universally considered uncool?

DJs do the scratching and whatnot, so they are fabricating a new sound from an old one, while cover bands are trying to just recreate an old sound, is my understanding.

Right, but I meant DJs at club nights or whatever, not rap-style DJs. I worship at the altar of Terminator X. :)
