Sep. 1st, 2005 12:38 pmWhat would YOU do if YOU'D grown up impoverished in one of the roughest cities in the nation and suddenly found yourself swimming in the streets amongst dead bodies, motherfucker?
Stolen TV sets. Yeah, that's what we should be worrying about. If we had our National Guard here instead of out in the fucking desert, maybe this shit wouldn't be happening.

Habitat for Humanity is going to help rebuild. Start with the poor!

Date: 2005-09-01 05:18 pm (UTC)NOLA's had so many problems with poverty, violence, racial tensions, etc... that it's no wonder people are boiling over and doing this crazy, wacked out shit.
Don't get wrong, New Orleans is A+++ in my book. But we need our National Guard HERE (tis why they're named 'National Guard' after all) NOT somewhere else. And it might have been a wise choice on Dubya's part to NOT transfer the money that WOULD have gone into repairing the levees towards the Iraqi war. Nice. Now one of our greatest cities is fucking destroyed and thousands could be dead.
Makes me so sad.
Er...sorry to rant. :(

Date: 2005-09-01 07:28 pm (UTC)I can't help but laugh though. I saw a clip on TV and it was all these dudes swimming away with TV sets and toasters and DVD players and they're looking like they just won the lottery or something. Where the hell do they think they are going to plug them in? And do they really think they're even going to work?? Great score dude, a water-logged TV set.

Date: 2005-09-02 08:35 pm (UTC)While visiting, I started reading what people were saying about race... looting... national guard... etc. etc. Well, I couldn't leave without putting my 2 cents in on this one...
1) I gave to the Red Cross because those people are unnecessarily suffering, so I did whatever I could do to help them out. If I had enough vacation time, I would be in training today to go down there - but unfortunately it was not do-able.
2) The people that are taking tv's, gun's, shooting at the very people that are trying to help them... I say, shoot them. I don't care what color you are, if you are poor, oppressed... whatever, stealing is a crime, shooting at police is a crime, shooting at FEMA workers is a crime. You can use whatever excuse you want to justify what they are doing, but they are vermin, and an embarrassment, to the people of New Orleans.
3) Those people live in a fishbowl. Everyone knows that, I knew that and I only visited there once. The levee's they had to protect that city were a joke and if the engineers did receive the funding to finish the work, those levee's were only made to withstand a level 3 storm. So they were useless. The Governor knew this and so did the freakin' mayor... they set those people up to die by allowing anyone to stay in that city... They said mandatory evac and then let people stay - it was a suicide mission!
4) The National Guard is only brought in if the city, county, state system has failed. The idiots that are running the show down there didn't start screaming SOS until yesterday... they should have been calling for federal assistance Monday. No one should be surprised at the lawlessness that is going on down there because on any given day there is ALOT of crime in New Orleans. So the Mayor/Governor had no idea this all was going to happen? BULLSHIT! There are NG troops all over the US, they are not all sitting over in Iraq and could have been in place before the disaster to help...
Those people, none of them deserve this and thankfully aid has started to arrive to them today. Hopefully they will all be out of there soon. This was a natural disaster, not a racial issue. It affected everyone down there, no matter what color, how much money you have, etc.
The end of the war in Iraq would not have saved the people from the devastation down there. Those people would still be suffering, they would still be water logged. I think the Mayor and Governor have failed the people of LA with a lack of emergency planning.
Why isn't the mayor sleeping in the Superdome with those people, showing his solidarity... Protecting the child that was raped there yesterday. Bet he slept on a nice dry bed last night...

Date: 2005-09-02 11:05 pm (UTC)I wrote that when I was emotional and angry, which I still am, but I didn't mean to suggest that I support the violence or looting of unnecessary items. There are a lot of despicable motherfuckers down in New Orleans right now who deserve to die, no doubt--the people thwarting rescue efforts, killing and raping others, etc. That, yes, is reprehensible and unfathomable. And absolutely there's more than enough blame to go around, and the NO/LA officials have their share. But that doesn't excuse the federal government.

And I dunno. I just think it's inexcusable that the feds didn't have troops and everything else there like THAT, regardless of who asked for it or didn't. It was quite obvious to everybody in the country that one of the country's most important cities was in a state of mayhem, with people dead and dying all over the place. They should have sent everything they had right away, and if they weren't needed, then so be it. People were ROTTING by the time anybody got their thumbs out of their asses. That's where my anger is directed, not at some stupid motherfucker wading down the street with a TV on his back.
