I know you know what I'm talkin' about, having lived in the delta.

my roommate has just proposed that those with southern accents can't make the "ui" sound and bastardized the word to fit their abilities. what do you think? is "rurnt" strictly a delta thing or is that simply the thickest part of the jungle, speech-wise?

Hmmmm, good question. My grandmother and aunt are the only people I've known to say it that way, and they've lived about half and half in the delta and across the state around Starkville. I can't think of any other words with that sound, though. I know they pronounce "wire" more like "wore. And of course, there's that tendency to introduce the "R" sound into other words, like "bananer" and "potater." But R's turn up in weird place (and disappear in others) up here, too.

The "R" that is lost in New England
is found below the Mason Dixon Line.

You wahsh ya cah in ya yahd in Boston
and warsh yer carr out'n th' yarrd in Jackson.

Hahaha, right on! Sometimes up here, though, I also hear R's in places like the end of "idea" and even, somehow, in "saw." I think the "saw" thing is more New York, but I swear I often hear people work that "R" into it, like "sawr." Or maybe more like "soar." Something like that.

I hear "warsh" in Sacto, too. Odd.

Am not rurnt. I have Steen syrup on my grits, too.

I think the sugar-in-the-cornbread thang is regional. I don't care for white cornmeal, for instance, and I like Mexican cornbread with the whole corn in it. Sweet cornbread is more like muffins, it's not the kind you have with beans or greens. Do your people drink buttermilk?

When Mani was in the VA they had cornbread there that was so tender and good I could have eaten half a pan. I was grunting while I was eating it. That's how you know something is really good, it makes you grunt.

You mean sweet cornbread that comes out of the pan sweet, right? Because honey and butter on cornbread is super awesome!

Right right, out of the pan. I've never tried honey and butter, but I'll trust you cuz you're from Jawgia. =)

I do not enjoy cornbread as itself, but all my life my mother has complained about sweet cornbread, in specific "Jiffy" brand.

Pretty much the only time I eat cornbread is when it's part of the stuffing in the Tgiving turkey. One year, maybe my last trip to CT, my aunt stuffed her turkey with Jiffy cornbread. I couldn't eat it. That shit was sweet. I apologized to my aunt and my mom gloated for the rest of the night about sweet cornbread.

You KNOW I may be a Yankee girl but I KNOWs my cornbread. In a cast-iron pan. Properly cured, of course.

Whatchoo use for the oil? I make mine with olive oil but I bet y'all use something else.

CAVEAT: Jiffy mix is acceptable to make pancakes with, since you're just dumpin sweet shit alloverem anyway.
