Lonzie won't eat! He seems very comfortable here and not freaked out, but he just ain't eating nothing. I think he's trying to be all hip and anorexic. :(
The same stuff he was eating at the shelter--Hill's adult, I think? They sent me home w/ a bag of it. He won't even have anything to do w/ the tuna I gave him!
Believe it or not, not all cats are interested in tuna. Only one of my three will touch the stuff, and she'll only have the tuna water, not the actual meat. Zorro will only eat crunchy food (and crunchy cat treats) and Magellan will eat crunchy food and cheese (and cat treats). Niether of the boys will touch the wet cat food (which just leaves more for the princess bitch cat). You might want to try some Pounce cat treats.
Did the shelter free feed or put food out for him only at specific times? If he's used to only eating at certain times, he might be confused by the constant food if you're free feeding (but he'll get used to it).
You should also have his food as far away as possible from his litter box.
Most likely though, he's still getting used to his environment. Zorro (who is the alpha cat) won't eat unless I'm standing near by whenever one of the other cats challenges the household cat hierarchy, even if it only affects the other two.
As long as he's using his litter box and is active (not acting lethargic or listless), I wouldn't worry much for another few days.
Is he still drinking water and using the litterbox? The litter use is especially key. He might be too freaked out to eat, but if he isn't peeing, that is a big RED FLAG EMERGENCY and he needs to be trucked off to the vet ASAP.
(yes, I have a special needs kitty, and yes, I have been to the Land of Nearly Blocked Urinary Tract with him. It was not a happy trip.)
Anyway, now that I have probably freaked *you* out (sorry), it may be:
a) he's too freaked out to eat yet, or that his food isn't where he expects it to be -- is he acknowledging the presence of the food dishes, or is he just wandering around?
or
b) that he has some sort of cold or respirtory problem and can't smell the food. Is he sneezing, or anything else that looks like he might have a cold? I know he turned down the tuna (!) but you might try a can of something that has a really strong smell and see how he reacts.
trust that when he's hungry enough he WILL eat. Panther won't eat if anyone is watching. he's strange. if I walk in the kitchen and he's at the bowl he'll stop and either wait for me to turn my back or leave the room.
your baby is still probably adjusting though. give him some time.
mine has never had that problem, especially on sundays when she gets her special c-a-n of fancy feast. (sunday is refered to as "can day" in our household...) she also LOVES greenie treats. but, like kikibelle was saying, not all cats like the same stuff, and like everyone else is saying, he's probably just adjusting. still, if it would make you feel better to see him chow down, you might want to try a small can of wet food and see if it tempts him. plus, it's like so totally fun to shop for canned catfood. so many flavors, so many colors of labels! or, maybe i'm just a tard...
I volunteer at a feline rescue (if I say cat house everyone thinks I'm a pole dancer). Our usual test to see if kitties are truly not eating or just having a moment is to use babyfood. Gerber 2, chicken and gravy is our litmus test - no kitty in their right mind would turn away from it.
Just a thought. But I agree with the water and litterbox advice.
