A Republican campaign worker who told police she was assaulted by a man angered by a John McCain sticker on her car admitted she made up the report, the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, assistant police chief said Friday.

When this story first broke I didn't even blink. People who rob people on the street are highly unlikely to have strong political opinions - or at least none strong enough to risk capture by pausing to scratch letters onto people's faces. Secondly, that particular letter could not have been carved so neatly in a struggle. You can see from the marks that multiple strokes were made, as though the person who did it took their time to make sure to create a neat, readable B. You could also assume that unless the attacker was in a head-to-head position or entirely dyslexic, she must have scratched the B into her own face while looking in a mirror.

Hey, I'm nothing if not empathetic toward those with mental and/or emotional troubles--I've volunteered to be locked up a few times my damn self, and I do feel bad for someone in that much inner turmoil--but come on, a backwards "B"? That's funny. I hope she's well enough to be able to laugh at it herself one day.

Aw, I hope so too. I just can't help but feel sorry for her - I guess because I think she was doing something to get attention but didn't mean to get THAT MUCH attention. That has to be so humiliating.
