So what do you call albums? A couple of times I've had people insinuate that I'm old fashioned because I say "album" and not "CD." But to me "album" means a collection of recorded songs, regardless of the medium. I grew up listening to tapes, but I still called them albums. I mean, I'd say "hand me that tape," but I'd say, "I listened to the new Dry Heave album last night." It always bothered me when people talked about so-and-so's "new tape." Like, "Oh yeah, I bought the new Lubricated Goat tape last night." Say album, man. Same with CDs -- people are always talking about the new Madonna CD or the new Eminem CD. I just prefer "album" for some reason.

Speaking of Eminem -- does anyone take him seriously? I've hardly watched MTV at all in recent years, so I'm pretty ignorant of the guy. But I catch a little here and a little there. I turned on MTV the other day and saw what I guess is his latest video -- something like "Cleaning out my Closet"? OK, so you had a bad childhood. So you have issues. Join the freakin' club. I mean really, who GIVES a shit? I know I sound like those guys who berated Kurt Cobain for whining about how bad his life sucked. I dunno. Cobain at least felt real to me (even though I'm not a huge Nirvana fan), but this guy smells like processed cheese food.

OK, back to the album/record/tape/CD thing. Let's say you've just bought the new Special Ed and the Remedials recording on compact disc.

I say album, unless I'm talking about a CD specifically. Hell, do any new albums (there I go again) come out on cassette any more?

I do occasionally say "record", but I almost always feel stupid about it immediately afterward. If that counts for anything.

dad refers to his vinyl collection as "albums". i tried to explain that, while they are indeed albums, they're more specifically "records" but he won't hear of it. everything on vinyl is an album to him, while everything i call an album is, to him, a record.

what about the whole dinner/supper thing. my mississippi relatives refer to the midday meal as "dinner", whereas i refer to it as lunch. their nighttime meal then becomes "supper" to my "dinner".

...but i never call it that. i just eat when i get hungry and call it food.

Damn, I forgot to respond to this til just now. I usually say "lunch" and "supper," but I say "dinner" sometimes. But I use "dinner" to refer to EITHER the midday or the evening meal. I guess it sort of means the main meal of the day. Like if my grandmother is cooking Sunday dinner or Christmas dinner, it could be at noon or it could be at 7 o'clock at night (but often is at like 2:30 in the afternoon). But I THINK that most people where I'm from mean lunch by "dinner," because I remember being a little confused when I moved to Virginia and heard my boss talking about the dinner rush being between 5 and 8 p.m. But yeah, I'm like you--I just eat.

Remember when PiL came out with that er..."album"? The version you got was called by its medium: Cassette, Album (if you got the vinyl), or Compact Disc.
