So what do you call albums? A couple of times I've had people insinuate that I'm old fashioned because I say "album" and not "CD." But to me "album" means a collection of recorded songs, regardless of the medium. I grew up listening to tapes, but I still called them albums. I mean, I'd say "hand me that tape," but I'd say, "I listened to the new Dry Heave album last night." It always bothered me when people talked about so-and-so's "new tape." Like, "Oh yeah, I bought the new Lubricated Goat tape last night." Say album, man. Same with CDs -- people are always talking about the new Madonna CD or the new Eminem CD. I just prefer "album" for some reason.

Speaking of Eminem -- does anyone take him seriously? I've hardly watched MTV at all in recent years, so I'm pretty ignorant of the guy. But I catch a little here and a little there. I turned on MTV the other day and saw what I guess is his latest video -- something like "Cleaning out my Closet"? OK, so you had a bad childhood. So you have issues. Join the freakin' club. I mean really, who GIVES a shit? I know I sound like those guys who berated Kurt Cobain for whining about how bad his life sucked. I dunno. Cobain at least felt real to me (even though I'm not a huge Nirvana fan), but this guy smells like processed cheese food.

OK, back to the album/record/tape/CD thing. Let's say you've just bought the new Special Ed and the Remedials recording on compact disc.

I do occasionally say "record", but I almost always feel stupid about it immediately afterward. If that counts for anything.
