What's the best way to get out of your own head? Alcohol is not an option at this point.

I problem I wrestle with all the time! You can either take the approach I usually take - think things to death for a year or so until you're so sick of it that you're finally over it, or you can try what I've been doing lately that honestly seems to work. It's cheesey, but it works. Every day during my lunch hour I write three pages in a paper journal and just get all my petty, ridiculous, obsessive thoughts out. It seems to leave the rest of the day clear for thinking about things that are much easier. It's easier to do crap I like - draw a picture, read, hang with the kiddums, etc.

Thanks, that makes pretty good sense! I'll give that a whirl. I need to be doing more paper journaling anyway. I was in a pretty good habit of scrawling stuff down all the time, but I got out of it for some reason. That sounds pretty good--like you tell yourself, I can't think about that right now, I'll think about it later. But it's not just shoving things under the carpet, because you do give yourself time for it. I'll have to figure out a plan for the weekend too, though. :)

i usually go to the movies -- good or bad ones, sometimes, especially bad ones.

and, you know, read lots of books set a long time ago and far away.

That's at least three recommendations for bad movies I've gotten lately! There must be something to it.

And yeah, long ago and far away is not usually my cup of tea for reading material, but it sounds pretty appealing right now. Thanks!

I'd say kayaing but being way too cold that's not an option. SO I'd say running yourself ragged on a treadmill (or swimming laps at an indoor pool_ just anything repetitive)---which may take 1 hour or it may take 2 but to the point where you've hit the "wall" and all you can think about is stopping---go 30 minutes past that point. OR get a tattoo---a BIG one---I guarantee you'll be thinking about nothing else.

Maybe tattooing might seem destructive to some but not to me---and for sure working out never hurt any one and you'll have good side effects not bad from either.

I especially like the monotonous working out path because it forces you to really listen to your thoughts until you pound them out of your head through exertion---maybe even adopt a mantra while you do the workout something you tell yourself over and over until it stops the brain chatter.

Ah well enough babbling-

Thanks so much for the suggestions! They sound really good, and I've already been seriously considering starting to work out. I've just never done it, and it's a little daunting to think about getting started. But I know it'd be good for me in a lot of ways, not just physically.
